Belle & Sebastian at Battery Park

Today Martha Wainwright and Belle & Sebastian played at the River to River Festival in Battery Park. Rain and an electrical storm threatened the show...

But after some downpours and delays, the show went on. Belle & Sebastian played an amazing, and long, set - bringing on stage with them a string section that they claim actually showed up at the park that morning asking to play with the band.

Masters at working the crowd, the band had the audience hanging on every word, lyric, sound and move. One fan was brought up on stage, one asked to apply mascara on singer Stuart Murdoch and one taking the mic to help sing. Murdoch also addressed the whole ticket issue, not mentioning that coffee shop by name, saying if they had known they would have surely done something about it.

One of the encores included a Jimi Henrix at Woodstock-esque version of the Star Spangled Banner.

Does anyone have the setlist? This was a great show!

Check out blindinghalo.com for 2 late 90's concerts by the Belles, special in honor of the 4th of july concert!

Wonderful show! You must love a band that includes a monolouge from "The Warriors" in between songs. They get new york.

Did anyone go to the after concert get together? I would have gone but couldn't understand what bar they said they were going to. Does anyone know what the bar was (and location)?

Not to spoil the magic, but I talked to a friend who has a booking agency in an office near the guy who manages/books B&S... he said that the string section rehearsed with the band prior to the show.

I would've paid full price to punch each and every audience member really hard in the arm.

Can somebody fact check: was this the world's largest gathering of pale, passive-aggressive, vegetarian/vegans ever? Critical Mass might be right up there, but this we know for sure: most of those people have no visible source of income, yet live in the most expensive city in the country.

I feel I should disagree with the above comment, but I really can't. I like Belle & Sebastian, but their fan base has really developed into a large group of people that suck.

There are alot more pics here.

There are a lot of great pics from yesterday here.

does your comment mean that you are impressed with their ability to survive in new york with no visible source of income?

I think your comments regarding the fan base are a bit off, considering to whom the tickets were made available. A weekday, noon, at a Starbucks? Should we all just take the day off in the hopes of getting a free ticket? This was one of the lamest ticket handling situations ever. I wish I could have gone, and would have been more than happy to pay a few dollars for a ticket I knew I could actually obtain. And yes, I have a good full-time job, live in the city, and have recently moved beyond "pasty pale."

huuhhhhrrrr-

I have a tan, love steak, work at a real job, live in NYC, and if you punch me in the arm I'll dislocate your jaw.

A few employed people I know went to get tickets during a break, only to find out that tickets were handed out early because there were people lined up anyway. So weird!

The string section was planned in advance and has toured with the band before.

Wouldn't most people who are fully employed be pasty & pale, if they worked indoors?

That's not the point. The way the tickets were given out meant lots of people couldn't get tickets. Even though there's a Starbucks on either end of my work street, they weren't the right locations. I think it's shitty for the city to offer a free show and make ticket options so narrow.
