Cop to Cyclist: "My Badge Number Is 999 Never You Mind"

2006_07_01_CriticalMass.jpg

Another final Friday of the month, another Critical Mass mashup with the law. Though he wasn't able to attend this one (and sadly, neither were we) Bikeblog has the story on how this month's Mass went down. In short: Same old, same old. Tickets left and right for "improper or lack of warning devices" and riding in the street.

I heard the ride was about 300 people. There were some mysterious vehicles looming around Union Square Park. One Time's up volunteer armed with a video camera went over to investigate a creepy looking mini van on the East Side of the park. As he got closer some dudes jumped out and grabbed him and took his camera. Why would guys in casual wear and jeans be so upset for being documented? They claimed they weren't cops...then more people began to gather around demanding the justification for the hold up...Then they said they were cops. WHAT??!??

Just as depressingly entertaining is the story of the cop who, when asked what his badge number was, responded "My badge number is 999 never you mind."

Were you there last night? Have a bad experience with the cops? We hear there were a lot of video-cameras at this ride, if you have videos please link to them in the comments!

And in case you were wondering how Critical Mass can exist peacefully, do a flickr search for Critical Mass. Notice how from Portugal to Chicago, really everywhere besides NYC, CM seems to be a happy and calm thing. Bloomie really, truly, has got to get a grip on this thing. There are better ways.

So the coppers are growing tired of the cyclist going on there annual "Bike ride"! Ha! I've seen those jokers in action for the past [2]years. They get the order to "Control" the masses and they go out and get creative with those summonses . As far as the "999" cop is concerned, Whomever he made that statement to really needs to press charges against him for it.( If that really wasn't his badge number) [1]If you asked him for his badge and that was the response then he broke the law by refusing to release his badge number. [2] the response could be mistaken as a thinly veiled threat on the cops part. Politics in the city!

my lack of capitalization and lack of periods (at the end of the paragraph) show me as being apathetic.

your lack of basic grammar and your unjustified, prejudiced views show you as being uneducated and ignorant.

    welcome to the internet.

  • mistermarkdavis

Tom, if you're going to be a grammar Nazi learn to spell agenda. Also you might want to capitalize your sentences and end them with periods.

The fact is the police have been acting illegally during critical mass for the past 2 years. They are putting citizens and themselves in danger. To top it all off some of them are lying on the stand in cases that have no evidence. They make the other police that are actually fighting crime look bad.

The cop could have said his badge was 666.

  • Da Commish

good luck getting help from the NYPD when the SHTF,

the traffic into the city from Eastern Suffolk and Rockland counties are gonna be murder.

not to mention, they don't pay them enough so you're on your own bucko.

I never said all of the NYPD are bad, just the 3 this week and most of the White ones and some Hispanic ones. I've never had a problem with Black officers and Asian one's are neutral but are getting up there in the White dept.

oh I have a clean record and never even had a traffic ticket or anything. You'll be surprised who I am.

"Either your clueless or an idiot."

thank you, you just made my day.

one or a few such incidents as you have mentioned should not be enough to undermine the whole of the NYPD, incorporating thousands of officers. if you truly believe that every single police officer has their own personal egenda and wish to break the law in order to detain you, despite doing nothing wrong, then YOU'RE the idiot

The NYPD is failing and the NYPD knows it is failing.

    Ask around.

Joe & Tom are obviously corrupt police sympathizers, besides being challenged as to capitalization rules. Here's a detail of the State Supreme Court ruling against the NYPD concerning Critical Mass. The NYPD has violated this EVERY MONTH since the ruling:

-ed, YOU'RE the Idiot. YOUR spelling needs improvement.

  • -ed

Tom, if you think the police won't bother you if "you weren't doing anything wrong" then your obviouslty don't read the newspaper or pay attention to the recent court judgements against the NYPD. The NYPD has been publicly rebuked by a judge for such illegal behavior, as recently as the last Republican Convention. Either your clueless or an idiot.

  • tom

i can't believe how little respect you people have for the police. if you weren't doing anything wrong, you wouldn't have anything to worry about. complaining because you were pulled up for an offence that you rightly deserved and ostracizing these police officers for doing their jobs is completely unjustified

  • -ed

If you witnessed any illegal behavior by NYPD, be sure to send a note to the mayor, and a report to the Civilian Complaint Board:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/ccrb/html/complaint.html

If the officer refused to give a badge number, YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTLEY fill out a complaint!!

Undercover or not, if an officer starts to perform police functions like arresting you, by law, he has to identify himself and show his badge. And not just quickly flash it, either, since you theoretically have the right to inspect it closely and make sure it's not just some fake security badge bought off eBay, not that most people could tell the difference between the real thing and a fake.

I apologize -- the link appeared perfectly o.k. in the preview section before I pressed "Post." I'll try it again.

Apparently, the Seattle chapter of Critical Mass had an altercation with undercover cops as well...

The blame for this lack of civility, these police tactics, these brownshirt methods of administering street justice--these are cyclists, they are killed by street motor vehicles, injured by car doors, hospitalized by pedestrians who push them over--the blame lies squarely at Mike Blomberg's and Ray Kelly's feet. From Bloomberg, given his general civility, this is really shocking, reminiscent of fascist regimes rounding up gypsies.

  • anti cop

I got ticketed for not having a light, although I had a rear light. When I looked at the ticket, though, it said that I didn't have a bell. Interesting. I guess that the cop needed something.

The police were actually considerably politer than the motorists with their NJ license plates.

  • a very safe wider

I may be wrong but if they were undercover cops in the minivan, most likely thier badges were not in plain view on their left chest.

NYPD white undercover cops are too easy to spot.

look for the sports jerseys. The minority undercover cop is where you're going to have look a little more closely. but then it's the white cop that get's promoted not the undercover minority cop who put's his life on the line in buy and bust ops.

Even with 3 bad cops in the news, this still goes on. (2 mafia cops and one bernard kerik)

    Where is the oversight?

  • Never YOU Mind, Pig!

Where're Serpico, Greenberg and Hantz when you need them? NYPD hasn't changed. It was corrupt then and it's corrupt now.

  • Brightliner

Lesson #1: Don't ask a cop for his badge number. It's right there on the badge. Look at it and memorize it.

Lesson #2: If you're going to approach undercover cops, have someone as a backup stay inconspicously in the distance with a long telephoto lens and a parabolic microphone. Two can play at that game. The footage would look great on Eyewitness News, not to mention in court.
