Proving that being a celebrity doesn't give you a free pass all the time, Boy George was forced to do regular ol' community service, like raking leaves in a city park, versus his ideas of having a concert or showing people how to apply make-up. Boy George managed a pretty sweet plea deal for his possession of 13 bags of cocaine - a fine, drug rehab and the community service. Of course, he was arrested after calling the police to his apartment, falsely claiming he had been robbed, but details. Boy George didn't show up for an earlier hearing, which raised the ire of Judge Ferrara. And Ferrera's patience seemed to be wearing out, telling Boy George that he couldn't have special celebrity treatment (probably realizing that Taboo-style makeup wouldn't be a service to anyone) and said, "It's up to you whether [community service] will be an exercise in humiliation or in humility."
Boy George told reporters, "It would have been more useful to make 30 grand with a concert, rather than be prancing around in a park. I could have raised some money, could have done something that would have helped." Oh, please! You called the police to your apartment while you had cocaine in plain sight - and our city parks really need some cleaning. The singer doesnt' really mind the cleaning and promises to wear something crazy when he does complete the community service later this summer, so get those cameraphones ready.

This is one lucky guy. If he were black or if that cocaine were crack, he would have been sent upstate for dozens of years, with community service not even a remote possibility.
As the judge said, a little humility would be in order.
what's to keep him from giving the concert? On his own?
Why do celebrities think they are being generous when they perform concerts and give the proceeds to charity? It isn't their money being donated. It's the public's money. And given the pathetic savings rate in this country perhaps the people would be better off keeping their money and having Boy George give $30,000 to charity.
Ditto Clooney and his auctioning off his Oscar gift bag. Rather than keep $50,000 in undeserved swag (and paying income tax on it) he had other people buy the stuff and he got himself another 5 minutes in the spotlight. Pathetic.
