Pencil This In

READINGS: Sebastian Junger (co-owner of the Half King) will be reading there tonight from his latest book, A Death in Belmont. The book ties into Junger's own life eerily - back in 1963 when Junger was a small boy growing up in Belmont, Massachusetts, Bessie Goldberg was murdered down the street from his home. Following the stories of the two different men suspected of committing the crime (and one of them working at Junger's family home the very day of the murder), Junger brings his inquisitive eye to the story, and its unsolved ending. Junger is a fascinating writer and the Half King is fast becoming one of the city's best reading venues, so it should be a great night. - Krissa Corbett Cavouras

7pm // The Half King [W. 23rd St. at 10th Ave] // Free

THEATER: Marc Palmieri's Levittown, which opens today, shows what happens when a family's carefully hidden dark history bubbles to the surface, as such things are wont to do. In this case the family is of three generations of firefighters living in the titular housing settlement built for former WWII GIs, and the grandson, whose life is on something of an unsteady course, is trying to effect a reconciliation between his abusive, estranged father and the rest. An experienced cast guided by director George Demas promises a first-rate chance to gawp at others' dysfunctions and desperate but vital attempts to work through them. - Mallory Jensen

Through July 16, Thursday to Saturday 8pm, Sunday 6pm // Axis Theater [1 Sheridan Square] // Tickets here

Also, don't miss Broadway Under the Stars tonight. A whole bunch of performers will move up to Central Park and perform, giving you a taste of what's going on, on Broadway.

8 pm // Central Park, The Great Lawn

COMEDY: We often forget that our local bar has a comedy show on Monday nights. But this week, comedy is on our brain (come to our show tomorrow, it's going to be hilarious), so we remembered. Lolita play host to humor writer Liam McEneaney's “Tell Your Friends!” stand-up comedy night. Tonight, head writer for The Onion Todd Hanson, Tom Shillue (Conan and The Daily Show), Jason Trachtenberg, and Claudia Cogan will be there, making you laugh.

8pm // Lolita [266 Broome St] // Free

MOVIES: It's time for another classic movie in Bryant Park. This time around they're showing "To Have and Have Not". WW II, an alcoholic sidekick, a resistance sympathizer/sassy jazz singer, Martinique...no wonder this is a classic.

5pm open, 8pm start // Bryant Park // Free

MUSIC: We always want to call them The Liars, but it's simply...Liars. Either way, they are playing tonight at Avalon with THE Apes. Liars are Thom Yorke approved, and one of them slept with Karen O before Spike Jonze did...so, a lot of people like them.

7pm // Avalon [47 W 20th St] // $15
