Pencil This In
READING: The wonderful Paragraph, a downtown writers' haven, is hosting a roof deck reading, which is a pretty sweet way to get a good view and some good stories at the same time. The reading, which features Mohammed Naseeu Ali (The Prophet of Zongo Street) and poet Wyn Cooper (Stories From the Interior), will actually be held on the roof deck at Clay, the spa next door to Paragraph on 14th street. Wine and cheese at Paragraph will follow the reading. - Krissa Corbett Cavouras
Friday // 6:30pm // Clay [25 W. 14th St], then at 8:00pm the party moves to Paragraph [35 W. 14th St] // Free and open to the public
COMEDY: Tonight at Rififi there's a stellar lineup of comedians ready to entertain you: Alex Blagg, Eugene Mirman, and Brian Kiley (NBC, CBS). And the $3 PBR's will make everything that much more hilarious.
Friday // 8pm // Rififi/Cinema Classics [332 E11th Street (btw 1st and 2nd)] // Free
And while were at it, don't forget to come by our comedy show on Tuesday for even more Mirman! And Aziz, Barry and Mulaney too. Tix here.
THEATER: You may think you've heard of The Vagina Monologues being performed in every possible way since it has become such a phenomenon over the past 10 years and spawned the annual V-Day festival and other innovative efforts to call attention to and stop violence against women -- but you haven't seen it performed in Tagalog, at least not in NYC. This year's new Until the Violence Stops festival is your chance, as the Filipina Women's Network is producing a benefit performance of the translated version, Usaping Puki on Saturday, presented by a brave cast of both amateur and professional Filipina women, in addition to a performance of the English version. Even if you don't speak Tagalog, it should be fascinating to see what this little off-Broadway show-that-could has picked up in its tour of the world and brought back, reinvigorated, to the city of its origin. - Mallory Jensen
