Blazing Glory: Flag Burnings in Brooklyn

2006_06_flagburn.jpgA Brooklyn neighborhood is reeling from the burning of seven different residents' flags Thursday morning. Six of the flags were in front of homes and one was on a car - and one home belonged to a firefighter who died on September 11, making his mother extremely upset. Though many homes have "support the troops" signs, police believe teenaged pranksters are reponsible, versus being a hate crime. City Councilman Lewis Fidler noted, "In Marine Park we are very proud of the fact that flags are out all the time. It is one of the really nice things about Marine Park." Fidler is also getting replacement flags for the homes.

free bird - what's extreme is assholes like you that insult people that have been the victime of vandalism. Jackass.

  • This is just wrong. You don't go vandalizing peoples' stuff like that.

Flag burning as vandalism is wrong.

Flag burning as a political statement is free speech, provided it is one that the burner has purchcaced.

This is insane. Who else would it be, than kids? Al Quaeda? Hamas? Iranian spies?

I think it is worth saying that this is the only country where a piece of cloth is so important. That's why you see them buringing it on CNN so much--it's the easiest way to get to you.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the democracy. If you want to burn someone else's flag--go ahead! Why not make a special "punk kids" flag and put it on your barbecue grill this weekend? It would be a great project for bored kids during the summer vacation.

I'd expect this in Park Slope are Cobble Hill before Marine Park. Surprising.

What's extreme is that brooklyn accent they have.

just listen to these ignorant folks, the more they talk the more they put their foot in mouth.

  • I grew up around Marine Park, and I would agree that it's probably prankster kids, bored with hanging out at Kings Plaza. There's not much of an extreme element out there in Brooklyn.

Little Punks. I hope they find the little traitors and have them drawn and quartered.

  • How long before the pundits blame the "Liberals"??
