Summer is Here!

true color satellite viewThe summer solstice occurred at 8:26 EDT this morning. Somewhere over the eastern Atlantic the sun reached it's northernmost point in the sky –being directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer at local noon. The solstice marks a point in time when druids appeared in droves at Stonehenge, newspaper columnists around the country make astronomically ignorant statements, and the 50 million dollar ad campaign for Stride chewing gum begins.

Solstice arrives here in New York with a break in the sultry weather. Today is cooler and less humid than it has been for the past several days. Don't worry tropical weather fans, the humidity returns tomorrow as the cold front that refreshed us today moves northward and becomes stationary. Thursday and Friday will be a bit steamy, with high temperatures in the mid-80s. The humidity sticks around for the weekend but it will be ten degrees or so cooler. With a stationary front to our north there will be a good chance for rain into early next week.
