If you've ever accidentally thrown something away in the trash, take heart. The Daily News reports that a Staten Island man accidentally threw out his wife's 3.5 carat diamond ring, but was able to call the Department of Sanitation, who let him follow the truck to New Jersey (yes, yes, that's the smell). We love how sanitation worker Carlo Tanutco and others helped Goldstein sort through "dozens of black garbage bags, piled more than 7 feet high" for an hour until they found Goldstein's yellow Shop-Rite bags - and the ring inside them. Note to anyone: Have very recognizable garbage bags - and a car handy to go to the transfer station to sort through them. But if your building incinerates trash, you're outta luck.
And two other things: This would be a totally sick but funny proposal idea (dumpster diving meets engagement story of a lifetime) and one should never put their worldly possessions in napkins on kitchen counters.

please please please please no more "new jersey smells" jokes; you're so much better than that. besides, i think that there are probably at least 100 more rats per person here in new york city than in jersey.
If you think that NJ doesn't smell, you've got some serious olfactory problems! Sure, not all of it smells, but only around Turnpike exits and Secaucus. However, New York City is smelly in it's own right too, just like ever other city. Let's also not forget Staten Island as well.
Let's face it, we're all surrounded by stink!
too bad. if that ring stayed in the trash it might have actually made this $50 worthwhile. i can't believe the crap people sell. i find it even more unbelievable that somebody would pay to recieve some "guaranteed authentic" nyc trash.
check it... www.nycgarbage.com
Now now, picking on New Jersey for smelling like garbage is somewhat the pot calling the kettle black. Afterall, Staten Island -- which is both part of NYC (whether you like it or not) and where the idiot who threw away the ring is from -- is literally the world's largest garbage dump.
Aint that the same garbage bag pic Gothamist used when they found human body parts in the subway...in a bag??
Ahh the memories.
Kojak: I was going to post the same thing.
Heh, I thought it was a slime from Dragon Warrior.
"But if your building incinerates trash, you're outta luck."
I think a diamond ought to be able to withstand the heat of an incinerator.
I can't believe they really found it. I wonder how much he paid the workers. Hope they didn't work for free.
