On Friday A Hamburger Today and Cupcakes Take The Cake joined forces to take over a particularly niche spot, Burgers & Cupcakes. On a particularly unappealing stretch of Ninth Avenue (our closest landmark is B & H Camera) the restaurant is bright, colorful and more than a little kitsch-y. The staff remained bubbly, gracious and seemingly undaunted as the groups and their readers took all eighty seats hungry.
The burgers, available in veggie and salmon as well as sirloin, are all yours to customize with $1 extras (five kinds of cheese, etc.). Ours was good, juicy and delicious, served with pickle in a wicker-ish basket, even if something was lost in translation between us and the grill (we have many of the same small issues Frank Bruni did, like asking for a medium rare burger and getting something at least medium). Fries do not come with the burgers but a whole plate of the plain ones are $2 and vegetarian chili fries are $4. Our table tried both, and while the fries were passable, we weren't bowled over and the chili fries didn't us convince us that meatless chili is ever a good idea. But we still had room for cupcakes, huge, $2, and taunting us since we walked in (we saw some tables order backwards). Our table's favorite was the classic carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, moist, delicious and just the right amount of sweet. The chocolate with chocolate frosting was a little much, too much thick, sticky frosting and much too dry.

veggie burgers are so insulting
Tabatchnik vegetarian chili is actually quite good -- otherwise I'm inclined to agree that it's usually pretty bland.
Veggie burgers are insulting, and none are more so than the veggie burgers at Burgers & Cupcakes. While I thoroughly enjoyed (and highly reccommend) the beef burger, my vegetarian friend took one bite of her veggie burger to find a bright magenta mess made entirely of beets. Ain't nothing wrong with beets, but they're certainly not what she expected to find in a burger. It also looked pretty unappetizing.
Other than that (and consistently slow service), Burgers& Cupcakes is delish.

For real. We go two places to get our taxes done and the best bacon/egg/cheese sandwich in the city but nada as far as sushi...
Just ate at bgrs and cupcakes.
It was awful. 1:30 sunday afternoon and the iceberg lettuce that served with the burger was brown on the edges. The pickle also looked like it had been sliced the day before. I had the cheese fries which are a joke. They are a regular order of fries with two slices of cheese melted on top, not a cheese sauce like most other places. It looked like a recipe out of a cookbook for kids. In fact I woul dave totally
The Bison burger was ok but not good. The best burger for my taste is the Shack burger from shake shacke. And the BLT Chilie Cheese fries rock as well as the shakes. Eat at the bar don't wait for a seat.
The decor misses the mark too. Pepto bismol pink and dark brown just don't blend well. .
