Yesterday's Action: Ogilvy steals U.S. Open

-All seemed set for local favorite Phil Mickelson to win the U.S. Open. He had come close at Bethpage (2002) and Shinnecock (2004). On Sunday, he entered the final hole needing a par to win and a bogey to force a playoff. But he double-bogeyed the hole, and Australian Geoff Ogilvy won the championship. As Ogilvy told NBC's Bob Costas afterward, the Winged Foot golf course in Mamoroneck may have beaten all the golfers. Ogilvy's +5 score reflects how difficult the course proved.

-Mets 9, Orioles 4: David Wright's grand slam and Tom Glavine's arm helped the Mets avoid a sweep. They're still comfortably ahead (9 1/2 games) in the NL East, and they haven't lost three straight all season. Even Ramon Castro hit a home run. Things look rosy.

-Nationals 3, Yankees 2: Joe Torre stuck with Chien-Ming Wang into the ninth inning, but Ryan Zimmerman's two-run homer gave the Nationals the victory. The Yankees bullpen, which managed to tire itself out and blow a seven-run lead Saturday, provided no viable options for Torre. As an aside, Alex Rodriguez, the man the New York media love to whip for not getting "clutch" hits, stroked a go-ahead double that would have given the Yankees the win.
