Body Language

2006_6_health_bodies.gifLately, Gothamist Science has barely been able to walk down the street, take the subway, or even look out our own window without seeing a poster for the Bodies exhibition still going on down at South Street Seaport. The show centers around beautifully dissected examples of entire human cadavers and organs, both normal and diseased. The latest victim of this extensive ad attack is Bellevue Hospital, where the above poster was spotted this week. While we're down with bringing P.T. Barnum-type science exhibits to the masses, we were less sure what to think of the curators claim that the bodies were "respectfully presented." The guy's shooting a basketball for god's sake!

As the original controversy (the bodies are actually those of unclaimed Chinese prisoners acquired from medical schools) has already faded from the public eye, we wonder if positioning the cadavers in such a care-free way is, in fact, respectful. The idea of cadavers being posed playing sports and swing dancing seemed to take the whole thing a little too casually. That being said, the exhibit is still amazing, both in its preservation technique and arrangements. And since the show's been extended until December you should definitely catch it. I actually got to see this and was strangely intrigued by it. However I did see a girl in a complete frenzy; yelling and stomping around about how cruel and disrespectful everything/one was in the middle of the exhibit. Because, that's super respectful.

Anyway, what I learned was that the point of making the body look like it's playing basketball is to see exactly which muscles and parts are utilized to do that kind of activity. If you go you will see that they have them sitting, standing, "running," etc. etc. It's actually interesting because you see exactly what your body does while doing these simple, day to day movements.

It is a science exhibit. They are bodies in motion doing every day things. Good job trying to fake a controversy "Gothamist Science."

This exhibit is a complete rip off of Gunther Von Hagen's "Doby Worlds" exhibit. See the original, don't settle for a poor imitation.

Last week while walking through Jacobi hospital, I noticed the Bodies posters everywhere as well. They are even on patient floors (I guess for visitors). It seems kind of disrespectful to have cadaver photos in the halls with sick patients around.

I'm in Minnesota and it is $50 for adults to get in the show. That is ridiculous. I wish that it was made more accessible to the public.
