Aborted Subway Terror Plot Spooks Riders and Politicians

If there's one thing the revelation that Al Qaeda was planning a cyanide attack on NYC subways is good for, it's making New York City and State politicians foam at the mouth over the Department of Homeland Security's NYC anti-terror fund slashing. Al Qaeda did not end up attacking the subways because security was increased and there wouldn't be enough fatalities. Senator Charles Schumer said, "This is just more evidence that what Homeland Security was terribly misguided and just wrong," while Representative Peter King fumed, "This is absolutely disgraceful." And what's more, subway riders are concerned anew over the terrorist-attack potential of commutes, on top of "Will the subways be flooded?" and "Why does it smell like ass at the Times Square station?" Now, if Al Qaeda was trying to figure out a way to initiate shouting matches between NYC and Washington D.C., consider the mission accomplished!

Wikipedia on cyanide. And in all of our Agatha Christie reading, we've learned cyanide smells like almonds. Oh, the NYPD is getting a new "security czar" - Richard Falkenrath, a former deputy homeland security adviser. Update: Muckraked tells us Falkenrath dissed Bloomberg and the NYPD for last October's alleged subway terror plot. Which sounds great, as we can now start Falkenrath Watch.

There is no terrorist threat.

Support ACLU in its war against NYPD and NSA!

what i don't understand is -why- everyone's so scared of poisons and germs and such when you can do much better with old fashioned guns and explosives.

I agree fully with TR- and ask suspiciously how come the news of this alleged subway threat wasnt released until now?

If it was a credible threat, the government put the lives of thousands of New Yorkers at stake by not telling them; otherwise it's a shameless political ploy, pulled straight out of the "we want more federal moneys" card deck by exagerating some non-event for the sake of political montebancing.

"Wikipedia on cyanide." If only it were true, since that inaccurate joke of a reference needs to go!

Wikipedia is pretty accurate, but I wouldn’t use it as solid reference, especially when writing a term paper. Take a look at the citations that a lot of the articles are starting to come with and use those references only.

They didn’t attack because they looked at the Sarin Nerve gas attack on Tokyo and thought it wouldn’t cause enough damage. Even though that attack injured thousands, it killed ‘only’ 5 people. Its still scary enough to shit one’s pants though. New Yorkers should bring an extra pair of underwear just in case.

Thanks KJ. I was in London during the bombings and I almost shit my pants. Luckily all I had was a little leakage. Ill bring an extra pair next time.
