The Hungry Cabbie Eats The Outer Boroughs: Hope and Anchor

Normally, when I find a place that isn’t good, I don’t write about it. It saddens me, and I’m not here to spread sorrow. I’ve never been much of a critic, because I just love to eat. There is enough great food in New York for a lifetime of Gothamist posts.

However, my girlfriend and I recently happened upon a restaurant that was so bad I found it personally insulting. Like a super hero who stayed up all night dying his underwear, I felt it was my responsibility to warn the city. It is called Hope and Anchor, but the Red Hook locals, I found out only later, have dubbed it Hopeless and Rancor.

I can appreciate grumpy restaurant workers, but only when the ‘tude is accompanied by character and at least a hint of humor (even if that humor comes at my expense). Regrettably, the girl who took our to-go order seemed to hate herself almost as much as she hated me, and I couldn’t find one redeeming quality in her rude demeanor. I asked if it would be alright to take our glasses of water outside to drink on the sunny bench while we waited. Her response was to stare at me blankly until it was uncomfortable and then mutter, “Yeah, don’t leave the glass out there though.” I’m not sensitive, but that bothered me.

We took our food to the pier at the end of Coffey Street, worried it wouldn’t be hot because it sat on the bar for a while as we waited outside debating whether the girl would let us know when it was ready (she did not, even though she had no other customers, and we were within earshot). It turned out not to be a problem for my girlfriend, because her $9 barbeque chicken sandwich was served straight out of the refrigerator. But we were hungry, so we ate it under protest.

My roast beef sandwich was still warm, but temperature was the least of its problems. The meat was visibly tough, but it was flavorful. Unfortunately, when a flavor is unpleasant, “flavorful” is not a plus. And the open face aspect made the experience a revolting mess. Roast beef sandwiches are a proud Brooklyn tradition carried on dutifully just blocks away at Defonte’s, so Hope and Anchor had best either stop serving it or move to a borough where people don’t know from roast beef.

Thanks for the review, I'll be sure to avoid it!! :)

Wow. I live in Red Hook and eat at Hope and Anchor a few times a week. Never had the roast beef, but I have had the chicken sandwich - I love it - and it's supposed to be served cold. Ever think that maybe that's why you're still a cabby!!!

Hope and Anchor is great, don't know what you're talking about! Perhaps not so great for take-out, but every meal I've had here has been a joy. An off day perhaps, but don't write them off completely as from my repeated experienced, they're a really solid restaurant that does most everything right

>>Ever think that maybe that's why you're still a cabby!!!

1) That should be in the form of a question.
2) It is spelled 'cabbie' in the title, so there's no excuse for spelling it wrong.
3) Why the pointless negativity?

Ever think that maybe that's why you're still a bozo making stupid comments on a blog?

Chris,

Agreed. To say "Ever think that maybe that's why you're still a cabby!!!" is a clear sign of an insecure and negative human being, using tacky and judgemental insults to make himself feel better. Not to mention completely irrelevant to discussing personal food preferences.

LOL, why does Sweeney Todd come to mind. Sounds like "Mrs. Lovett" has a serious chip on her shoulders.

"Ever think that maybe that's why you're still a cabby!!!"

First of all, Scott Berkman, YOU are a loser.
Are you making a statement or asking a question? Go back to school and take a couple of grammar courses. Didn't you take one while getting your GED?
Second of all, FFDave was in the top three of his graduating class at NYU, and is definitely more intelligent than you.
Third, get a girlfriend. Maybe you'll stop hating yourself and taking your self-loathing out on people who actually matter in this world.
Fourth, you're fat. Oh, and you're ugly.

Huh, I've eaten at Hope & Anchor a bunch of times and I never got a rude 'tude. And the food was good - their burgers are delish. So I respectfully disagree with your review of H&A. Maybe you should give it another try.

Dude, you picked the two WORST items on the menu. Yeah those suck. But their roast pork sandwich is great, their burgers are good, their brunch specials are tasty yum.

You gotta know what to order for sure there.
If you're in the hook again try something else on the menu.

Sorry 'bout that, I don't work there but I'm in the neighborhood and I feel like I owe you an apology :)

Throwing in a bad review every now and again adds some credibility, I think. I understand not wanting to spread the hate, but telling some folks which places to avoid is the second best thing to telling 'em which places to hit!

I think Hope and Anchor is good if you are a regular.

as someone who has lived in red hook for a long time, and remembers H&A opening, i must say if you enjoy this food, you either have the strongest stomache on the planet, or you have lived on berries and grubs for a majority of your life. Every, and i mean every time i have eaten there i have gotten the sh*ts, sometimes before i have even finished my meal. the only time i go in there anymore is to grab a quick drink with some friends i have that still work there. this place sucks, and chances are if you like it, you might have a little suck in you too.
