The NY Times has a nice map today showing the shift in affordable housing for moderate-income households from 2002-2005. The data is from a study from NYU's Furman Center that reports that the number of apartments for households earning $32,000 a year dropped a whopping 205,000 in the three year span. The percentage of apartments dropped 20% or more in Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. Manhattan only saw a 12% drop which can likely be attributed to the fact that there already wasn't much moderate-income housing. The Bronx saw a 15% drop, which probably has to do with the of affordable housing in the borough.

How much of the loss was directly attributable to NYU's real estate practices?
In addition to 'housing in NYC unaffordable for middle class' NY Times reports 'Sky blue'.
Firefighters and police are NOT required to live in the five boroughs. And that is their starting salary before overtime and we all know police LOVE overtime. And that "salary" is so low because the unions agreed to low starting salaries in return for bigger raises. In other words, screw the young guys that aren't in the union yet!
