Jay Z Puts the Cap Back on Cristal

Breaking Beverage News: Rap star, entrepreneur and Beyonce's boyfriend Jay-Z is boycotting Cristal champagne after some remarks Cristal management made about the rap world. Jay-Z is going to stop drinking Cristal in his personal life (note to all musicians about to appear on Cribs - get the Cristal out of the fridge!) and remove it from the bars of all 40/40 club locations. Here's a summary of what caused the boycott from the AP:

In a special summer issue of The Economist magazine, Frederic Rouzaud, managing director of Louis Roederer, said the company viewed the affection for his company's champagne from rappers and their fans with "curiosity and serenity."

Asked by the magazine if the association between Cristal and the "bling lifestyle" could be detrimental, Rouzaud replied:

"That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

"Curiosity and serenity"? Jay-Z released a statement on Wednesday, saying, "It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention.' I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life." The AP does point out that the article's writer actually used the phrase "unwelcome attention" to refer to Dom Perignon and Krug, but whatever, Jay-Z's clubs (and personal life) will now be bubbling with Dom and Krug. Gothamist can't believe the Cristal people are so upset - Courvoisier sales jumped after it was passed around. Perhaps it's because they aren't seeing much of the profit when clubs sell bottles for $600 a pop - it's highway robbery!

Here's a 2002 UK Observer article about hip-hop and Cristal. And during tours, P Diddy likes Cristal, but Busta Rhymes has opted for Moet. One fun Cristal reference in a Jay-Z lyric: "Let's take the dough and stay real jiggy, uh-huh/ And sip the Cris' and get pissy-pissy." from a Hard Knock Life.

I see it this way. [1]Before "Cris" was popularized in the culture it wasn't making the level of funds it currently is . With that said, I think that everyone has the right to make comments about whatever they want. No matter how dissatisfying it may be to other's that doesn't make it a comment based on race! There is a difference here people. Did the guy state that he doesn't want minorities guzzlinng the product? Don't think so, He made a comment about an aspect of a particular group of "Supporters" of his brand . No harm, no foul, He does have the right to speak his mind & if Jay-z doesn't want to drink "Cris" anymore then that's Jay's problem! Everytime a product maker speaks there mind about something relating to a group(Even if that group is heavy on the minorities side) somebody tries to turn it into something negitive. If you don't like what someone says then say "FUCK YOU so & so " and keep it moving ! Don't dwell on the issue!

Jay-Z would not want nerds wearing his rocawear clothing brand. You see Sean John's product placement and it is always sexy and attractive they would not feature a nerd because of their brand strategy. So it is not racism it is just business. Thats a sweeping statement. I don't think Jay-Z would care if the pope himself decided to where rocawear. Its business like you said. You have to understand something... you talk about business like you know what the heck you are talking about. Take for instance 50 cent being on the cover of the new york times. Thats right the New York times.. Mr I got shot 9 times south jamacia queens super thug who made over 50mil dollars in one year. Do you think that these companies really care that he is this super thug. No. Why because he is doing what they are trying to get their harvard mba grades to do ..market the hell out of their brands(in most cases for free). They try to act like they would never sell out but please..as long as their bottom line is met all the inital intentions go out the door. at the end of the day it is business. People have this weird perception of how money is suposed to look. Like a really rich person is suposed to be driving a maybach. Would you be supprised to know that statics show that the opposite holds true. Rich folks keep a low profile even shopping at thrift stores and continue to live below their means just like they were before the money came. Rap music have created new money for Afican Americans that was never see in any generation. Hence the reason why so many African American decide to go into entertainment. The concept of money is new to black. It started in the 1960's. So we have more opportunities today for blacks to obtain more wealth. Despite the fact that Rap may be negative in the eyes of Greater America no matter what happens at the end of the day, It satisfies their bottom line. Like you said its business.

  • Hip Hop makes money in the billions for itself and corporations. People like Jay -Z are astute to this fact and position their brands to profit off of brands like Cristal try. I think Cristal has an image they want to uphold and I am sure Hip Hop was not their target demo. I find it curious after making allot of money off of Hip Hop consumption, BET & MTV free product placement now Cristal wants to distant their brand from that demographic. Now that Hip Hop has brought Cristal to the mainstream via free ad mentions. Cristal wants to now use the opportunity to re-connect with its target demo (free of charge thanks to Hip Hop).A Savvy strategy but I don't call it racist. If I being an African American had a brand of Automobile like Maybach I would not want Flavor Flav driving around "acting out" in my brand. I would not want product placement in videos with scantily clad women being groped and Cristal being poured on them. The fact about high end prestige brands is yes they are about excess and extravagance but subdued behind private quarters. Act like you been there before don't make a Maybach or Cristal seem common by placing the product in brand compromising situations. Rappers take these brands and showcase them to consumers who cannot even afford them for the purpose of bravado. The brands themselves don't want placement in Wal-Mart because that is not the marketing strategy. The Ying Yang twins promoting Cristal dilutes the brand that works against the marketing strategy. It is just business not racism. Jay-Z would not want nerds wearing his rocawear clothing brand. You see Sean John's product placement and it is always sexy and attractive they would not feature a nerd because of their brand strategy. So it is not racism it is just business. I doubt Cristal would disapprove of Will Smith or Michael Jordan promoting the product. Hip Hop has been a culture of rip-off whether it be stealing samples for beats or stealing icons of rich decadence like Cristal and remix-in it to validate the genre. Jay needs not hate on Cristal, Cristal helped make his brand. Rappers have used prestige brands to validate or be a co/signer to establish their own identity. Think about it? What is the image of Roca-fella records or Jay-Z? It is Cristal sipping, Maybach riding, 7 jeans etc etc and oh yeah by the way I am a great rapper. Hip Hop ought to be glad companies have not sued them for copyright infringement. P. Diddy builds his brand off of un-official brand endorsements like Versace, Rolex, and Bentley etc. I call it “Icon Sampling”, Hip Hop samples cultural icons, prestige brands and the icons have allowed hip hop to endorse their brands out of fear of accusations of racism. Plus it increases these brands bottom line without paid endorsement. Everybody got what they wanted. Why cry about it now Jay-Z?? You never had an official endorsement deal with Cristal and they don't owe you one. That is just the nature of the beast. “Don’t hate the player (Cristal) hate the game (Hip Hop)”

"A house like Louis Roederer would not have existed since 1776 without being totally open and tolerant to all forms of culture and art, including the most recent musical and fashion styles which — like Hip-Hop — keep us in touch with modernity," Louis Roederer Cristal said in a statement to AllHipHop.com...ahhahahhahaah...look at this bastard now...fear he is going to lose market share like hell...he retracted his statements..I say hip-hop does this to every brand who "act a fool" when we give them light beyond their boring brand perception...hip hop gave these mutlinationals brand extension timberland, nike, cellphone companies...watch your mouth...peace

  • Sasha C

As a matter of fact...I'm coming out with the Upper Crust mixtape part 1/"Prep-school biatch"...only for my upper crust family whether you're white, black, asian etc. but if the lower class loves it will be 'welcome attention' for my pockets and my bank acct.

  • Sasha C

Personally, I think the hip-hop community should stop supporting so called 'white brands' in general...do not mention multinationals or brands at all in their songs just their own product...whether it be liquuor or sneakers...can this happen? Then white folks will not find it curious...where is the article from Mercedes-supplier of 'whips-cars' to the nazi army and 'jews'love for their 500s/SEL/CL/CLK...

  • PBR sucks

When are rappers going to start namedropping Brooklyn Lager?

  • I don't understand why rappers like Cristal to begin with. Dom is much more interesting, but I suppose lacks the fancy packaging.

  • what the hell

Samantha, maybe they wouldn't if the demographic was different, but maybe not. But it has to do with the social context, nto the race. I guarntee you that if a bunch of white skatboard feeaks started drinking it, or white punks, or rich red-necks in the Ozarks, the same comment would have been used. So calling in the race card is not only unfair to this guy, but unfair to everything Jay-Z claims to be fighting for. Crying wolf over silly things like this does more to damage things then many things out there. There is plenty of racism lets concentrate on real racism not misinterpreations.

sorry mh, you've made too many pointless assumptions with indecipherable grammar for me to waste time on. there's no argument about legislation here. your answers are all in previous posts if you care to sort it out yourself. i'm sorry you lost such an opportunity to 'stick it to the man' though.

    cheers.

    dug: go back and read.

Jay-Z has his own perspective. He can construe what he pleases. The remarks were offesive to him. He is a rich club owner and choses not to sell the product any more.

He is also a very rich "pop-culture thug" that has the young society paying his club lease. Did you know he will be at Radio City Music Hall on the 25th of June. There is your upscale lower scale association again. The concert is sold out. Radio City has no problem with that.

dhex, go back and read the blog and the article. I think that you are confused.

    Good day.

  • huh?

is it me, or is mh is totally incoherent?

    dug:

You seem to be mistaken. We are talking about rich people. Not your average Joe in the office. The people who are buying this are people of NEW MONEY (they have a lot of it) and people of OLD MONEY. Not people of "NO MONEY." These rich people have enough to drop $1,800 for three bottles a night.

It is a parishable liquid. You empty you bladder of it fifteen minutes after consuming.

There is no law that says what you must do with a product after you purchase it. There is no law that say a man can't speak in public about his favorite drink.

If other people can't bare to drink it because the name of it falls off the lips of a wealthy man they would not accept into their circle.....oh well...I guess it is an unsuccessful product that could not endure life's dilemas. Or the marketing is weak.

Will wealthy people stop buying a Rolls Royce because it is featured in a Debbie does Dallas porn flick every three month. No the name, Rolls Royce, is too strong.

How long have you known about Jay-Z, 40/40 Club and Cristal. Probably not until today.

Wealthy people not going to stop drinking Cristal. Just as they are not going to stop accumulating money, just becasue the little people below them are also accumulating it.

Someone else is driving this campaign to make a statement about . They are making a fool of him. The public statement made him look like he is not moving the product to the customer his marketing campagin has intended it to. Or maybe he would like use Jay-Z to get the name of the product out. Hey. It worked for Timberland and Hilfiger plus other upscale products. Maybe he is just jumping on the band wagon. Seems odd that he voices those rediculous concerns.

The only people pleading his case,Louis Roederer and Cristal, are considered lower class.

  • Samantha T

"which is kinda dumb on their half: if you make an upmarket product, part of its appeal is that it conveys status (and presumably quality); don't be surprised that it gets used in this context."

Dhex, I agree 100%. I think, also, that the comments were pretty condescending, even if they weren't intended as racist - why couldn't they just have said "We are proud of our product and are happy to hear that others feel as strongly as we do"? I don't blame Jay-Z for being miffed and, frankly, I don't think the Cristal people would have made the same kinds of comments had the demographic been different.
