Drink Up On The Cheap

2006_06_dollars.jpgIn this week's annual cheap issue of Time Out New York, the writers highlight what ten whole dollars will get you at some fine bars, one decided dump and restaurants.

Their picks:
- Five shots of anything (noting that a recent customer asked for Hennessy and got it) $10, Continental
- Whiskey and a can of beer, $5, Laila Lounge (You could spend all of ten dollars, pre-tip, on a date. Imagine.)
- Pitcher of margaritas on Tuesday, $10, Luke & Leroy
- Two Tecate beers, each with matching tequila chaser, $10, Cherry Tavern

Ours:
- 5 tastings of any wine in the store, $5, Vintage New York
- For the most broke days, the free wine at the Chinese place, The Cottage, with dinner (entrees around $8).

Go on, ruin it for everyone, and tell us how you'd drink on ten dollars.

You should really go out and ask a homeless person. They know how to get fucked up on half that amount.

One beefeater martinin up at Luger.

A date at Laila Lounge? Depressing.

I'd steal me a white shirt and black pants from the Salvation Army, go to one of them fancy places they got, and pay the busboy 10 bucks to let me bus away all the half empty bottles and glasses.

Then I'd sit me down in the alleyway and have me a little soiree; a real exclusive one.

I feel sick thinking about the cans of Tecate and shots of Montezuma tequila at Cherry. No more, I say. I'd rather go to the countless happy hour places and get 3 pints for $1 less. Local 138 on Ludlow street has a good one. Old Speckled Hen.

$2.50 for 12 oz of Six Point draft beer at Habana Outpost. Every night they're open (Thu-Sun). That's a deal.

Umm.. that's 10 40oz's of KING F'n COBRA ($0.98 before tax at the local Bodega.) Screw going somewhere.. sit in an alley or someone's roof and enjoy your 400 oz with friends.

ten 40-oz. of 99-cent country club malt liquor! save the dime change towards a dime bag.

i make friends with the bartender and always drink for free...hahah suckers!!!

vintage increased their price to $10 for the 5 tastings

i don't think that paying for drinks makes one a sucker. rather, spending enough time in bars to make friends with the barkeep makes one a sucker. get a life. i did. for every free drink i have received, i had paid for more than necessary. i gave up on that and am far happier now.

NoIdea on 20th street (btwn Broadway and Madison) has $5 pint sized drinks.

Go to No Idea when it's you're "name" night (there's a calendar outside and on their Web site) and you drink for free.

El Cantinero's upstairs bar has $3/$4 margaritas most nights and free greasy food.

BTW No Idea is actually between Park/Bway on 20th and El C on University btwn 11th/12th.

welcome to the johnsons (rivington at essex, lower east side) has $2 drinks every night till 9. $10 spent there is a pretty good evening.

Absolutely, hands down, best deal in the city:

Thirsty Thursdays at the Blue Donkey on Amsterdam Ave at 84th St.

$15 gets you all-you-can-drink well booze and Pabst on tap until 1am.

Add the pool table, air hockey, and video games, and you have one hell of a night...
