Last Night’s Action: Tempers Flare In The Bronx/The Rain Goes Away In Philly

-Yankees 6 Indians 1: Make no mistake; Jorge Posada made a mountain out of a molehill. Jason Johnson wasn’t trying to hit him, but when Johnson started barking at Posada to get down to first, the Yankees needed to respond. Randy Johnson took it from there, buzzing Eduardo Perez and earning an automatic ejection since both teams had been previously warned. No matter, it was great to see Randy stand up for his team and especially his catcher.

Johnson wasn’t needed on the mound since the Yankee bats finally woke up from their week-long slump. Johnny Damon and Andy Phillips went deep while Robinson Cano continued his torrid streak with three more hits. The win and the Boston loss puts the Yankees alone in first place.

-Mets 9 Phillies 3: For awhile it looked like the remnants of Alberto would deprive the Mets of a victory. New York had jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind a David Wright home run and RBI single and a nice two-out rally in the third inning when the rains came.

After a 65-minute rain delay, Darren Oliver came on and pitched three innings for the win and Pedro Feliciano and Heath Bell combined for three innings of shutout relief. The win puts the Mets an astounding 8 ½ games in front of Philadelphia for first place.
