Last Night’s Action: The Locals Win!

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg-Mets 9 Phillies 7: Carlos Beltran is making everyone forget his poor 2005. Beltran homered again, his 18th of the year, while the Mets battered Philadelphia for nine runs and thirteen hits. Carlos Delgado and David Wright also homered in the win. All of the offense was needed because Tom Glavine and Aaron Heilman had off nights. Glavine struggled through four-plus innings, giving up seven hits and four runs while Heilman came in with a five-run lead and gave up two hits, a walk and a three-run home run.

Billy Wagner came into the game in the eighth and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his 13th save. With the win, the Mets have a 7 ½ game lead in the NL East and the best record in the National League.

-Yankees 1 Cleveland 0: New York broke a four-game losing streak with a tidy victory over the Indians. Robinson Cano hit a home run in the sixth to provide the only scoring of the game and Chien-Ming Wang held Cleveland in check for 7 1/3 innings. Mike Myers, Kyle Farnsworth and Mariano Rivera provided relief for the Yankees who moved into a tie for first place with Boston.

-Indiana 80 Liberty 78: New York blew a five-point lead in overtime to fall to 2-7. Maybe lousy basketball at MSG is contagious?

The Mets are restoring some of my faith in baseball. However, Mr. Steroids and his cheating pals really have pissed me off. The ideal situation: Bud Selig being found shooting up steroids in public. The guy must be on some sort of illegal substance or just extremely stupid given his mismanagement of baseball. The world would have been a better place if George W. Bush had become baseball commissioner instead, because he would have gone after the cheatifing evil doers.

ooooh a Mets logo, yay!

"Mets 9 Phillies 4"? Hmmm... I think you may have botched the final score since even in your write up you mention that Glavine gave up 4 runs and Heilman gave up a 3 run homer. 4+3 = 4?

Yup, I screwed that up. Started writing it up when the game was 9-4 and forgot to go back and change it.

Hey y'all - thanks for responding to the call for Mets love a little while ago...appreciate it. But, um, yeah, you might want to get the score right! It was 9-7. Also, a headline saying "locals win" when in fact the Liberty is weird! I got all excited til I saw the score! Oh, well...

And "offense" is a strong term when all of the important runs were unearned.
