Hot Sake - Food News You Can Use

2006_03_food_Hot Sake2.jpg- Lots of talk these days about absentee Chef’s and their far-flung empires. Here is Frank Bruni's Diners Journal round up, where he makes this observation: "I’m betting that if we had copies of Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s daily planners for the last year, we’d see that he spent much more time at Perry St. and at Jean Georges than he did at Jo Jo, 66 or Vong. My assumption is based on my experiences at those restaurants and reports from other diners. At Perry St. and Jean Georges, a great meal was easy to come by. At the other three restaurants, not so much." And Beth linked to this UK Observer article yesterday.

- As usual, the big Big Apple Barbeque event was a mixed bag with most “pros” harping on the glitches, organizational shortfalls and lack of a sound fallback plan. We personally hope that they get it right some year as the idea of bringing real Q to NYC is noble, and we don’t have the time to travel and experience this stuff in its natural habitat. Hopefully this other annual NYC BBQ event will turn out better for the attendees.

- Honestly, had no idea what this was about when the inserted spin wheel fell out of our Voice last week. As best we figure it is about swapping beer for bags, but we still equally confused about the underlying motivation after visiting the site.

- Oh, and Kate recently expressed her displeasure with lack of coverage for the new European style markets being set up downtown by an ex-Greenmarket vet. Hope you had a great weekend.

Umm, if you bothered to read your own site, you would see that you've posted about the Beer for Bags deal before. Maybe one of those 52 comments could clear it up for you.

Stickler, thanks for pointing that out. .

Big Apple Barbeque = too much of a wait, or too expensive to bypass the wait ($135 to bypass the lines, wtf?)

BBQ NYC = private picnic, invite only. Hipsters only or something?

Yea, I learned my lesson a couple of years back going to Big Apple BBQ. The loooong lines and price really ain't worth it.

The Crumpler was kind of fun. Generally speaking, the barter was worth about 50 percent of the offered bags' retail price; the Complete Seed messenger bag lists for $95 but the Leffe and Chimay required to get a "free" one costs about $50 at the nearby beer wholesaler. Unfortunately, they didn't have their faboo computer backpacks as part of the deal.

Me, I was still in a food coma after the BBQ fest so I didn't get to the Sunday night party where they gave away the beer they'd collected all week.

Crumpler makes good bags. You'll see more of them on the street after this promotion, I'd bet.
