PARTY: Disorient & Kostume Kult invite you to The Black & Light Ball; a Black-Lit Burner Formal. It's like a rave, in your dorm room...but in a gallery, with a lot more blacklighting than you could afford in college. With lighting art on display and blacklight flooding the space - we think it's okay if, just this once, you wear your sunglasses at night. Much more art, craziness and music (er, of the "techno" and "house" variety) will be a backdrop to the ball, a summer fundraiser. There will also be a blacklight sensitive fashion show by PHil's PHads and Caitlin Stolley at 10 pm.
Friday // 9pm to 6am // KMFK Gallery [515 W. 29th btw. 10th & 11th Aves] // Tickets here
ART AUCTION: We mentioned the open call to artists a few weeks ago for this event. Tonight you can all get involved, by coming to Williamsburg for the Art Auction. Part silent auction, part party...can't really go wrong with that mixture. Bonus: bids start at $30, so even if you're on a budget there's no need to leave those walls of yours bare.
Friday // 8pm // The Universal Space Agency [32 B South 1st St., Williamsburg] // Free
BOOKS: Don't miss the Used Book Sale at the St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library this weekend! Happening all weekend during the day, St. Agnes boasts a huge selection of books at great prices and new material added every day of the sale. The sale (and sales at other libraries happens a couple times a year, so if you miss it this week, sign up for their events email and make sure you don't miss the next one. - Krissa Corbett Cavouras

ART: Queen's P.S.1 riffs on the Food Network's Iron Chef to bring you Iron Artist, a competition of live, improvised art making by contemporary artists. The contest will consist of two 45 minute duels with running commentary by a panel of judges, roaming commentators and New York art critics. Sounds like a freak show. - Jason Laning
Saturday // 3 pm // P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center [22-25 Jackson Ave (at 46th), Long Island City] // Free with Museum Admission ($5 sugg. donation)
EVENT: Since now it's *finally* looking nice out, don't squander the sunshine in dark theaters or climate-controlled galleries. Instead, you can check out a bunch of different arts offerings along what some are calling the "little Broadway" of Tribeca. Tomorrow's all-day "Walk on White Street," organized by several lower Manhattan theater/dance/fine arts groups, has workshops, lectures, exhibits, and performances that are all free, plus eateries in the area have good deals going. It should be a perfect way to get your dose of culture but also easily be able to duck back out into the refreshing early summer air. - Mallory Jensen
Saturday // 11am to 7pm // White St. between Lafayette and W. Broadway // PDF of the full program here

There's also a literary raffle with profits going to Girls Write Now, a nonprofit that pairs high school girls with professional women writers for weekly one-on-one mentoring and monthly writing workshops. Plus, cupcakes! - Krissa Corbett Cavouras

I\'m confused -- every year Gothamist creams their corn over the Big Apple BBQ, but it doesn\'t seem like this weekend\'s event has even been mentioned...did you guys forget? Are you all suddenly vegetarians! Wha\' happened?!!?
Eat meat this weekend! The 4th (I think) Annual Big Apple BBQ is in Madison Square Park.

Actually, St. Agnes library always has used books for sale (though their annual book sale is bigger), so stop by anytime for a decent selection of books, and tons o\' magazines
I\'d hate to think that the \"we\" who manage that band (and who also wrote this entry) are slighting the Big Apple BBQ in favor of their own interests.
The Big Apple BBQ is a great NYC event. To see the heading \"BBQ\" in part of a weekend roundup--and then a listing for some gig at Union Pool--makes me suspicious.
I\'m just sayin\' is all.
It\'s \"barbecue\".
BABBQ mentioned here
