Last Night’s Action: Boston Bombs The Yankees While The Mets Cruise in Zona

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg-Red Sox 9 Yankees 3: For five innings it seemed like the Yankees might pull off an improbable sweep. They led Boston 3-1 heading into the sixth, but Jaret Wright suddenly lost control of his fastball and Boston jumped all over him and two subsequent relievers to cruise to a 9-3 victory. The loss leaves New York with a ½ game lead in the AL East.

Before the game, the Yankees learned that Gary Sheffield will require surgery on his injured wrist and will be out until September. With both of their corner outfielders out for a significant portion of the season, the Yankees will probably turn to the trade market soon. Melky Cabrera has been great, but even with him in the lineup; the Yankees are still a hitter short. Bernie Williams is no longer an everyday player and Bubba Crosby doesn’t hit enough to play regularly.

-Mets 7 Arizona 1: Orlando Hernandez was dominant, giving up only three hits to his former team in his first complete game since September, 2000 when he was with the Yankees. It was also the Mets' first complete game of the season. El Duque allowed only two walks in the outing and he got all the run support he would need in the 5th inning when the Mets scored 4 runs. Carlos Beltran hit his 15th home run of the year (he had 16 last year) and Endy Chavez has 3 RBI’s.

Is there any reason why the NYC baseball updates always have the Yankees logo? There are lots of Mets fans on Gothamist too, ya know...share the love!

Gotta agree with you there Maia. It\'s almost always the Yankees logo, and the mets coverage is always three lines long. And I hate these combined posts.

The grammatical train wreck continues. I\'m starting to believe you guys do it intentionally, and then have a big collective laugh at Gothamist HQ over the uproar it causes.

\"Orlando Hernandez was been dominant\"
\"El Duque allowed only gave up two walks\"

Go Mets!!!

I rarely blame Joe for losses, but last night I think was parly his fault. Jaret Wright always breaks down around the 5th inning. What the hell was Joe thinking, waiting so long to pull him? Getting the bases loaded with no one out and letting a run in before going to the bullpen? Thats absurd. Granted, Proctor was terrible, but I think Wright needs to be kept on a very short leash. Who knows, maybe bringing Proctor in earlier would have allowed him to shut them down, instead of having to come in with the pressure of bases loaded no outs...

Also, why does he keep going to Ericsson? The guy DREADFUL. He should only be used as a mop up guy when the team is already losing by a huge margin, not when a game still somewhat reasonably within reach.

those errors were mine. i fixed them. and yes, we laugh, laugh all the time.

as far as the mets coverage goes, it\'s hard to have them as the primary focus of the entries when they\'re playing on the west coast. so what we do is, post a blurb when we go to bed and update in the morning. when they return to a more decent time zone, you\'ll see more mets logos.

Ugh. Please don\'t call it Zona. No one from the Southwest calls it Zona.

I can think of 26 reasons why the Yankee logo comes first... :>)
