Shakespeare in the Park(ing Lot)

2006_06_arts_midsummer.jpgLast year, getting off the subway and taking the usual shortcut through the parking lot home, we stumbled upon a Shakespearean production. Right there, in the glow of the early evening, in a parking lot. It was part of the annual free summer Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot series.

They've just announced their productions for this year, The Tempest and As You Like It. The shows are, of course, free. They're presented by TheDrillingCompanyNY, which has been co-producing this Lower East Side Shakespeare experience with Ludlow Ten since 2001.

One of the last plays Shakespeare wrote, The Tempest will be performed from July 6th through July 22nd. As You Like It (our favorite comedy!) will run from July 27th to August 12th. Both shows will be performed from Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm at the Municipal Parking Lot, right across from 85 Ludlow Street (cross streets Broome & Delancey Streets). Bring a pillow or something, there's a lot of broken glass in that lot!

Man, I'm a big fan of stacked girls in tank tops performing shakespeare.

This has been going on since before 2001, I went to Shakespeare in the Parking Lot productions in 1998 and I think the year before that as well.

sorry, i saw them do midsummer's night dream a few years ago and it was dreadful. the only reason i care when small companies do shakespeare is that when it is bad, it is very very bad. people in the audience might never go see theatre again. do not waste your time.

this has been going on for a lot longer than since 2001. at least 1995, back before Rivington and Ludlow had morphed in the Bleecker St of the Lower East Side, and off-off-Bway theater thrived there (Surf Reality, Collective Unconscious, etc)
