Map of the Day: Miamahattan

2006_6_miamifake1.jpg

Ooooh! Apparently Manhattan geography mashups are the new black. Kottke's Manhattan Elsewhere project has apparently inspired others to make their own. What makes this Miami/Manhattan mashup so cool is that Maximus actually connected all the roads-- so the MacArthur Causeway turns into the Lincoln Tunnel, and the Venetian Causeway connects to the Westside Highway. That is some attention to detail!

What we'd love to see is someone connect all the great cities like this-- producing a huge GoogleMaps Megalopolis with all the streets flowing into each other. Anyone game?

Well, often Miami Beach does indeed seem to be directly physically connected to New Jersey.

Okay...I honestly don't want to be a pest about this...but I'm stll curious as to how to pronounce Gothamist's Ooooh! (I've already asked Jen, but I don't think I ever got a response.) Is it Oooo or an extended Oh or is it, perhaps, an unpronounceable, like the name of God in Hebrew? Please clarify!

God, I despise these map mash-ups. They are the bane of my Gothamist experience. Why hasn't Miamist posted the same material? It couldn't be because it's completely senseless, could it?

Agree with virid. I don't get what's so interesting about these. Wow, NY is larger/smaller than city X, and one roadway turns into another! Whoop-de-doo.

Visually, they're not all that interesting, but if you're familiar with both of the cities, it's fun to think about what they'd be like mashed together. I for one think it'd be pretty damn cool if I could take a Balbo/Holland Tunnel under lake Michigan/Hudson River and be in Manhattan! And before you knock Chicago, remember ... it's cheaper than Brooklyn and a hell of a lot bigger than Hoboken. For a little while at least, you could rent a 1200 SF two-bedroom for $1,300/month instead of that basement studio in Park Slope. And eventually, maybe NYC's far-superior subway would take over our CTA.

This map is totally useless the island of Manhattan is planning on swimming south.

this is awesome.
i could walk to the beach from my apt in my speedos, would the delano be on the lower east side?
i guess we would loose the east side bridges unless they became monster piers into the warm blue sea.
super fun.

Enough of the map mashups.
Go play Sim City.

I've always thought Miami Beach felt like a smaller Manhattan.
Though not as cool... with less energy and far less to do.
But just the layout is very similar.

I will always dig NYC more though.

Please. Miami, and the rest of the world, suck at our tit.
