What would Alvy Singer think? ianqui emailed us about a jury summons notice that came in the mail. Only it was directed to someone who lived in "Jew York"! Clearly the Post Office relies on zip codes, as the summons did get to ianqui. Which makes us wonder how many Manhattan residents were told that they suddenly lived in Jew York - or when the County Clerk's office realized the typo. At any rate, ianqui was a good Jew Yorker, as she reported to jury duty yesterday.
And for kicks, here's that part of Annie Hall:
ROBYou can read the whole script here. For more information about being a NY Juror, go to NYJuror.gov and we loved the NY Times article about County Clerk Norman Goodman and the ways people get out of jury duty.
Alvy, you're a total paranoid.ALVY
Wh- How am I a paran-? Well, I pick up on those kind o' things. You know, I was having lunch with some guys from NBC, so I said ... uh, "Did you eat yet or what?" and Tom Christie said, "No, didchoo?" Not, did you, didchoo eat? Jew? No, not did you eat, but Jew eat? Jew. You get it? Jew eat?

It is most likely a data entry error, as the J key is above right to the N key on a standard QWERTY keyboard. However, in theory almost all the jury summonses for New York County would be going to New York, NY so one would expect the default setting in the database to be "New York, NY" and nothing else. It is not like they are sending these to Hoboken.
get it? jewry duty?
I always thought Jury Notices cam via Driver License Info? I bet ianqui's Driver license doesn't have that...
If you are going to poke fun at spelling errors, you should spell check yourself. See "Was Subway Death Caused by Breaking the Rules?" post.
And how can we not forget this NY *JEW* classic?
They'd stop sending these notices, but they need the eggs.
looks like the work of the same guy that doctored bush's nat'l guard paperwork for dan rather. nice try...
Wow. We truly live in Jew York.
Oh, I can promise you that nothing was doctored. I just scanned it in as is.
In the end, I was picked for a trial. My fellow jurors were suitably horrified when I showed it to them today. Some of them insisted that I should have tried to get out of jury duty by arguing that the courts had committed a personal offense against me, but it just didn't seem worth the confrontation.
