Rain Screws Up Friday Afternoon Commute

The city got two inches of rain between 4PM and 6PM yesterday afternoon, and that's what seriously snarled most everyone's commute. There were delays on the 1, 2, 3, C, E, V, and F subway lines, causing some to compare it to the the transit strike, but with worse weather and actually attempting to take subways and buses and problems on the roads. The flooding was terrible - one cabby, with passenger, was stuck in a "massize lake that sprung up" on the 86th Street transverse in Central Park; the Post reported that debris had covered the drains, causing the flooding, and the police had to rescue them. And somehow, JFK Airport only got 0.2 inches of rain, while Newark had 90 minute delays and LaGuardia had 4 hour delays!

e-liz has a Flickr set of deluge photographs on 14th Street from yesterday, and gives an apt description for the yellow sky: "like a bruise"

It’s not completely their fault MissPink. The NYC sewer system can't handle the rain we had last night, so it overflows into other areas. Since the subways are underground, that’s going to be the first thing that’s going to be affected.

Also when there’s heavy rain, raw untreated sewage usually overflows into the Hudson River. So if you’re thinking about taking a swim in any body of water in NYC, I wouldn’t recommend it.

The R and N were down, too, around 7 p.m. on Friday night- I ended up walking from my Astoria dwelling to Queensboro Plaza to get on the 7 train, so I could get into town. I am SO SICK of the MTA proposing all these stupid money wasting projects when the trains SHUT DOWN during rain. Couldn't they fix that first??

Nick, I'm not overly concerned with spelling and grammar. I wasn't defending Jen. I was pointing out that it is hypocritical to criticise another's grammar and spelling when one's own is far from sterling.

Michelle, you might want to look to your own grammar and spelling before attempting to criticise anyone else's. I will refrain from the sexism spewed by the other two commenters, though.

I was trying to get back to Manhattan from Borough Hall and the 4, 5, and R trains weren't running at the time, either.
