Last Night's Action: Yanks Blow It

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpgYou will hear plenty of excuses tomorrow morning when it comes to the Yankees. They are hurt. Taking three games from Detroit is great considering how injured they are. What do you expect with Rivera on the shelf? The fact remains that New York had a golden opportunity to destroy a playoff-caliber team Thursday and they blew it with a 7-6 loss.

If the Yankees had won, they would have swept the Tigers in Detroit, and sent a message to the league that the “best” team in baseball isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Instead, they leave with a series win, but a missed opportunity. And, before you fall for all the excuses, consider the fact that they led this game 5-0 and 6-3. Sure, you can say that having Jeter, Matsui and Sheffield may have given them enough runs to win, but the pitching staff should be able to hold those leads.

Yet, Wang melted down and after Proctor did a great job to stabilize things, Farnsworth gave it all away in the ninth. Now, New York heads to Baltimore with a one-game losing streak instead of a six-game winning streak and that’s a pity.

  • Yes, J, they actually might win the Central. Grooming the team has paid off... I'm impatient though... it's been a looooonnnnnnggggg time.

The Tigers look great this year, and are gonna give the White Sox a run for the central...

  • Thank God my hometown team won at least ONE of the games. I swear, one day, the Tigers are gonna be great again.

    I can dream, can't I? Sigh.

Good Point...Joe T rolls the dice and comes up snake eyes...I'd rather see Proctor any day besides Farnsworth too...

this is true, but all that being said, he should have kept proctor in, or gone to someone OTHER than farnsworth who is turning out to be a one big ass sucking disapointment this year. he has a ratio of maybe one good outing to three bad ones. if the lead was of three runs or more, ok maybe, but one run? he blew a one run lead on tuesday forcing mo to pitch three innings, what would make anyone think he would be better last night?

It is too bad that we didn't get the sweep, and it shows how much this team needs a Rivera. That said it's time to start talking about Joe Torre being one of the best managers ever in the game of baseball. He's done it again, and kept this team close to the top of the division despite all the injures, the different line ups every night, etc. etc...
