Atlantic Yards and What It'll Mean Down the Road for Politicians

People are wondering why City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is so quiet about the Atlantic Yards project. The Observer points out that Quinn was instrumental in leading City Hall opposition to the West Side Stadium, with the suggestion being that Quinn is thinking about running for Mayor and will need to keep certain people happy. Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn's Daniel Goldstein tells the Observer, "It would not be a principled position for her to support it as it is currently proposed," while City Councilwoman Letitia James, whose district will be affected by the project, says, "We’re still negotiating with the Speaker’s office. She definitely remembers that I was there for Hudson Yards.” Oh, yeah, Hudson Yards - that's what the West Side project was called.

In other Atlantic Yards news, the State Supreme Court's Appellate Division said a lawyer previously disqualified for working with the state and advising the Atlantic Yards project did not have a conflict of interest.

  • Ok, things are getting mixed up here, so I would like to help clarify:

    Quinn opposed the Jets Stadium

Quinn pushed through (with Miller) Hudson Yards!

Hudson Yards is the plan for numerous skyscrapers on the west side. Husdon Yards is NOT Jets Stadium. Jets Stadium was just a part. Hudson Yards was generally opposed by people in Chelsea and Hells Kitchen, which is why a lot of people in those neighborhoods now hate Quinn.

Hudson Yards is the plan that is tied to the number 7 subway extention. The 7 Subway extension is to be payed for with PILOTs coming from what would be any property taxes on new buildings at Hudson Yards. A concern here is the market for buildings, if not enough go up there will not be enough PILOTs to pay the bonds for the subway line.

Lots of idealism can be seen here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/hyards/hymain.shtml
