Gothamist Music Picks: Wolves 'n Tapes Edition
The week is short and there really isn't a huge amount going on in the venues until the weekend. Plus, it's going to be about 1000 degrees, so packing in to a small sweaty venue isn't highest on our list of priorities. Here's what we do suggest, and as usual - feel free to list some shows in the comments.
Tonight Sunn O:))), Oren Ambarchi, Boris are at Avalon. Sunn O:))) is probably the most annoying band name to have to write/type...but they're pretty interesting, so we'll let it slide.
Wednesday night Laurie Anderson plays the early show (7pm) at Joe's Pub. We aren't going to pretend we know the rest of the bands playing around town that night (Velvet Pop, Hair Police, Patina)...so let us know which you might suggest.
Thursday Asobi Seksu is having their cd release show at Joe's Pub. This is a great venue for the band, and we're psyched to go check them out there. We haven't seen them since they played the first ever Movable Hype show. Meanwhile over at Sin-e the French Kicks will be tearing up the stage. In Brooklyn, Rogue Wave and singer/songstress Nicole Atkins are at Southpaw.
Friday night Mary Timony, Tralala, Human Television and Tiny Amps at Mercury Lounge. We may give Human Televistion a second chance, the only time we've seen them was at that R&R show (and the sound there is terrible). However, before heading to that show be sure to get over to Pier 17 for the kick off to the Seaport Music Festival concert series. The shows are all summer, free and outdoors. They're kicking it off right with the Super Furry Animals.
Saturday night Prefuse 73 is back in town, this time at Bowery Ballroom with Edan and Mind.Blaze.Body. While over at Webster Hall Wolfmother will be rocking us hard. We saw these guys play an afterparty at SXSW and have pretty much turned in to superfans since then.
We didn't even know that Snow Patrol was back/still around. They're playing at Roseland on Saturday night with The Duke Spirit. We caught the latter band not too long ago and weren't very impressed, we can't imagine the sound at Roseland will do much to improve their set. You may like them though, check out some songs at their website.
Sunday we can assure you that just about every blogger in town will be at Bowery for the Tapes 'n Tapes and Cold War Kids show (except us, we forgot to get tickets). Listen closely and you'll hear them reminiscing about the time they, like, totally saw Tapes 'n Tapes at Rothko. Also, listen closely to these:
