New York City's Tomorrow

2006_05_tomorrowland.jpgNew York Magazine decides to look at the city in the year 2016 in terms of architecture and real estate development - and how that'll impact New Yorkers. It's a great look at how drastically the city could change in ten years, which is all overwhelming, exciting, and kind of scary, because for every rendering of glassy buildings, what does that mean for the neighborhoods? Are they plans for more affordable housing to meet up with the luxury condos and pleasure palaces? At any rate, it's all interesting to see how the post-September 11 and Bloomberg administration have suddenly encouraged all this planning buzz.

Here are the sections in the NY Magazine feature:
- Lower Manhattan - It's all about Ground Zero
- Brooklyn and Queens Waterfront - check out the cool maps
- HIgh Line - the new "it" neighborhood
- Midtown West - new Penn Station, new Madison Square Garden, new Javits Center
- Harlem - Columbia's Manhattanville dreams and a vibrant 125th Street
- Fresh Kills - the new urban oasis?
- Hunts Point - the Bronx gets green
- Downtown Brooklyn - Gehryland
- Flushing - Fix the smell, make Roosevelt Avenue a "gateway" and work on the waterfront

If this is what NYC becomes, i'm moving. This is the most depressing view of the future of the city i've ever seen. I wish there was more crime.

How is this city expecting to sustain itself economically if it won't make room for the working class? A city containing nothing but rich people in condos seems kinda impossible.

A city with nothing but rich people? Have a look at London! That's our future!

Actually, New York will be _more_ affordable in 2016, as in that year, we'll be smack in the middle of a major depression, rivaling the one in the 1930's. If you put together the many pieces of the puzzle, you'll see that the numbers are definitely pointing to this.

Woohoo! So you're saying all I have to do is wait ten years and I can finally afford that CPW penthouse I've always wanted.
