Last Night's Action: Mets and Yanks Drop Games to Cellar Dwellers

Despite another strong effort from Pedro Martinez, the Mets lost 5-1 to Florida Friday. Meanwhile, the Yankees dropped a rain-delayed, 7-6 game to the lowly Royals. Derek Jeter became the 8th Yankee to reach the 2,000 hit mark with a questionable hit in the 4th inning.

Gothamist thinks Martinez deserved better during his 10-strikeout performance. Three singles by the Marlins gave them the lead in the seventh, and the Mets struggled against the Marlins' Josh Johnson. Martinez has pitched well enough to win in each of his nine previous starts, and Friday was no different. During the middle innings, Martinez could not be touched. Unfortunately for the Mets, Johnson proved just as effective. Gothamist did gasp a little after hearing David Wright missed the game with back spasms. Even if he hits fifth all season, Gothamist remains convinced he's the best hitter on the team.

With Tom Glavine starting Saturday, the Mets should expect to rebound. With Orlando Hernandez set to make his Met debut Sunday, they'd probably like to avoid his standing between them and a Marlin sweep. After all, the only time the Mets should worry is when Martinez or Glavine is not starting a game.
