Last time I checked I didn't know you had to purchase manners..how much are they? People who are poor are doomed to be dregs of society? I think not.. Nothing wrong with public housing per se, just don't put it all in one place. Disperse individual public housing apartments across "regular" buildings. Thanks again Robert Moses, for fucking up NYC. Bastard.

If you take away the public housing, it only benefits rich white affluent members of society. The poor blacks will have to move out of NY and southwest where they will probably live in worse conditions like new orleans shantytowns. I don't think public housing removal will help black people it will only help rich white people.

Goebbels: Public housing is essential part of the problem. Poor people do not always behave like animals, it is the athmosphere in public housing projects that spoils them. (imitating reagan's voice:) "Tear down this public housing project!" Bill Cosby is right. There is something fundamentally wrong in current mainstream black culture in the US. Sick racists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are the main culprits. "Marriage and work is for white people" is the dominant opinion among young urban african-americans. Living on welfare checks is ok. Church-going african-americans in the south (outside New Orleans which is probably the worst example what is wrong with public housing) are in much better shape culturally.

I disagree zincick. It does take MONEY to teach manners and discipline. People in poor socioeconomic conditions are vastly prone to becoming the dregs of society. People with money at least hope that they can change. How are you going to have any hope for the future when you live in crappy public housing, with 3 siblings in a 2 bedroom apartment, with your grandma just watching over you but not really supervising, your father always working, your parents not married, Drugs on the street, bad rap role models? and going to public school getting a bad education. now, if you had an education, you'd realize that you live pretty well in relation with other people in other parts of the world. But since they get horrible educations the best they can hope for is getting a job as a security guard or bouncer. Isn't it weird how all our security guards are black and they all have very bad backgrounds? One of the great ironies of the new order.

I always thought UWS was a safe area, especially near Amsterdam and 86th. I agree that the problem with rowdy kids is getting out of hand. We need 1) Stronger police presence in UWS (I also like broken window policy) 2) Less public housing 3) More abortions 4) Sanctions to parents who are unable or unwilling to control their kids (if your 8 year old kid kills somebody you should be responsible) 5) Longer school days (so they are harassing only their union teachers) I'm afraid what this city will look like in a few years. Next mayor may very well be new Dinkins or Sharpton and cutting police force..Wasn't Ferreri's campaign promise in 2001 to take "Guliani cops" out of the streets or something like it?

I used to pick up someone I was seeing from work near Amsterdam and 89th and I'd always see these huge groups of kids hanging around, without a cop in sight. Not to mention that these same kids are usually allowed to leave school for lunch as well. These kids on the UWS -- I don't care what race they are, I'm pretty sure the white kids arent exactly angels either -- are getting rowdier by the year (or maybe the month). A couple months ago, I heard about some lady getting robbed by some kids between Columbus and Amsterdam with a toy gun painted black, then a stabbing outside of Brandeis high school (although if you know its reputation, that's no surprise really).

Did u hear about the 8 year old boy who killed the girl with the bus? well, the kid's father is only 25 and has 3 kids already!!!! the dude makes like 8 bucks an hour or something. how the fuck can you not pay for an abortion or use condoms? I mean, I know you obviously don't want to take care of the kids cause you let your grandma take care of em. Why not just get an abortion? I don't get it. It's obvious that you don't love'em because if you did, you wouldn't bring them into this world in such harsh conditions. Hell, I'm 30, make like 60 grand a year and still don't think I can make enough money to have a child and give it a comfortable life that it deserves.

today I was riding my bike near riverside drive near the intrepid when I saw a whole bunch of little black kids like 7-10 years old and they were trying to hit some Welcome to New York. This is happening all the time. Large groups black kids from public housing projects are harassing people all over town (yes, they seem to be always black). Few weeks ago week I saw they snatched food from someone's table (she was eating alone out in the restaurant at Amsterdam Av at 79th street. They just threw it away and laughed. Looked like 12 years old kids. Yes, I know this is isn't that serious, probably misdemeanor but I'm sick of this. I want the broken window policy and Rudy back. In East Harlem these lovely youngsters killed a "whitey".

Holy crap, my boyfriend and I walked up on the scene where that kid was stabbed right after it happened. We were going to catch the bus at Amsterdam and 89. There was only one police car on the scene, lots of people yelling and staring, and thankfully we didn't actually see the body. We beat a hasty retreat, and as we walked back to Broadway we heard someone say a guy had been stabbed. We tried to get the bus on Broadway, but they weren't picking up passengers, only dropping off... I guess in an attempt to find the suspects. Scary.
