Lesson Learned: Jets are a Big Part of Fleet Week

2006_05_fighterjets.jpgHa! It turns out a lot of New Yorkers had no idea what was going on with the fighter jets doing fly-bys over NYC skies yesterday, causing 850 calls to 311. According to AM New Yorker, the operators' script read, "These flyovers are part of Fleet Week and there is no cause for concern." And the Intrepid's spokesperson said, "It's just Fleet Week. Everyone knows it's Fleet Week." But that's the thing: When we think Fleet Week, we don't immediately think of jets in the sky - we think boats and sailors.

Here are Fleet Week activities - apparently there's a party at Webster Hall TONIGHT - with amateur striptease (here's the coupon). And thanks to everyone who commented on yesterday's "why are there jets flying so low?!?!" post - Gothamist clearly needs to brush up on our Navy aircraft knowledge.

so your mission i sto get those 850 people to read the gothamist... i wonder how many people called 911

My office co worker and I saw a single plan flying low. Then a few seconds later we saw a formation of jets follow. We agreed that the planes were flying in an illegal air zone. Then when we saw what looked like the Blue Angels we firgured it out. They were saluting us with their formation. It is fleet week. Sailors....yeah!!!!

When I think "Fleet Week" I think "Blue Angels" - it must be because I grew up in San Francisco, where it is a tradition for them to fly around the buildings and dip low. It is quite a fantastic sight as you are entering the city via the freeway when they are flying because you can see the whole city.

I don't give a shit if it IS fleet week. We are getting buzzed here in Forest Hills too and I don't appreciate it. Screw the Blue fricking Angels. Go buzz someone who cares.
