On the Plate: Upcoming Food and Wine Events

May 27: Habana Outpost's Grand Reopening
Habana Outpost is reopening with a day full of festivities and eco-dining. In addition to enjoying their Cuban/Mexican menu, you can support local artists at their open air market, listen to drummers, watch capoeira, or stay late for the "surprise" musical performance at 9pm or burlesque at 10pm. 757 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, 718-858-9500.

2006_05_food_bwypan.jpgMay 27 - May 29: Broadway Panhandler's Moving Sale
While we wait eagerly for their new digs, we can help clean out their old inventory at their moving sale -- they'll be offering up to 75% off, and from 11 - 5 there will be free refreshments and live music. 477 Broome St. (on the corner of Broome St. and Wooster St.), 212-966-3434.

May 28: Queen's Hideaway Anniversary Party
We heard a rumor that the Queen herself is throwing a party this weekend to celebrate one year of business. What better way to celebrate than with beer-battered and fried soft-shell crabs, hambone beans, cornbread and potato salad? They'll also be selling commemorative beer cozies for the $1 PBR's. 12:30-5:30, 222 Franklin Street, between Green and Huron Sts, Greenpoint. Call 718-383-2355 for more details.

May 29: Schnack Hot Dog Eating Contest
Sometimes, size does matter, like at this annual event where eaters compete to see who can down a 30" beef Stahl Meyer hot dog on a specially baked 28” bun the fastest. Our favorite rules:

• No deconstructing of the dog and/or bun; breaking off portions of the dog and bun together are allowed.
• Swallowing without sufficient chewing is grounds for disqualification (based on judges’ determination).
• Contestants 21 years or older can wash down their dog with a cold mug of Jever Pilsener beer during or after the contest.

Winners from the qualifying rounds will compete at 1:00pm at Schnack, 122 Union Street, Brooklyn. 718-855-2879.
