Don't Mess With Donnie Baseball, He's the Hit Man

A-Rod best ship into shape. If not, his hitting coach might have to take him out. After all, Don Mattingly is the "Hit Man." Gothamist reader Matt sent over a link to this poster to us. It seems like it's about 20 years old. The text of the poster (click the image enlarge) reads "Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees, 1985 American League MVP and Converse. The shoes he wears every time he makes a hit." His gun? A silver bat. His ammo? Baseballs. Watch out!

More importantly, where can Gothamist get one of those stylin' pinstripe suits with matching tie. We'd like to wear it to the next Yankee game we attend. And what's with the lack of facial hair? Marketing or not, it's not Donnie Baseball without that 'stache.

damn now i'm missing my Canseco/McGwire "Bash Brothers", Bo Jacksons "Bo Knows", and Darryl Strawberry "Cream of the Crop" posters from back in the day.

Donnie "Baseball" didn't actually have the mooustache till 1987 when the Yankees started sucking for a prolonged period of time. Perhaps he should shave it off again and maybe we'll win a World Series despite his cursed ass sitting on our bench. Please don't take this as an insult, I love the Yankees and Don Mattingly but he never won the big one as a Yankee and that really is the only measurment for Yankee greats.

hmm, 1987, eh? i guess it's just ingrained in my memory that he had one at all times.

and yeah, the fact that he never won a championship sticks out, but can you really blame him for that?

I actually have this signed poster framed and hanging on my living room wall. A birthday present to my fiance a few years back.

The best part is the crazy ass picture of him signing the poster attached to the back. His hair is just the freakiest thing - sticking out all over the place. He looks like he just rolled out of bed. Actually he looks like that infamous Nick Nolte mug shot.

He should have the eye black as well.

Wow, do I remember this poster! All I need now is my Rickey Henderson and Mike Pagliarulo baseball cards and my Dave Winfield and Ron Hassey souvenier cups and we're ready to go.

I meant soda cups, BTW.

Don Mattingly actually autographed this poster for my son during Spring Training Camp. He was only a toddler and barely remembers the incident, but he still has the poster over twenty years later.
