Amtrak Power Outage Along Northeast Corridor

The busiest - and most profitable - section of Amtrak's routes, the Northeast Corridor Line, has suffered a major power outage this morning from DC to Queens. At least four trains - three NJ Transit and one Amtrak - were stuck in the tunnel under the Hudson River, and one is stuck in a tunnel outside Baltimore. We're hearing that Amtrak is bringing in diesel-powered trains to push the trains out.

Amtrak says power was restored to parts near and in Washington. NJ Transit has suspended all its Northeast Corridor and NJ Coast Line service. Everyone will be rushing for buses!

Update: Feedburner's Rick Klau is blogging from one of the trains closer to Wilmington; his train has started to move.

Update 12:10PM: Apparently a pregnant woman on one of the stuck trains is having contractions!

Update: It seems that everyone has been evacuated from the trains and that the situation is under control. We think it's cute that commuters called NY1 to complain about their conditions: “We can't really get any clear information. They don't communicate. There's no air conditioning, no lights. I understand the staff doesn't know what's going on but they're not keeping us very well informed."

And no word on whether the pregnant lady had a baby.

Last month I traveled from Edinburgh to Pitlochry Scotland on a train and was reminded of what a fucking disaster amtrack is.

They really should blow up Amtrak and privatize the Northeastern Corridor.

Whoever takes Acela to Boston regularly is blowing cash like you wouldn’t believe. The schedule SAYS it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes but its closer to 4 straight hours. All for over $100 each way...

High Speed my ass. Your better off flying Jet Blue or taking the Bus.

My favorite thing about Amtrak is pushing old ladies out of the way in Penn Station to make sure I get a seat - because for $100 one way to Philly, I think I deserve a seat.

I used to take the Amtrak Clocker from Philly to NY 5 days a week, and this is standard..a nightmare...

There's probably better running train service in North Korea..!

In this country:

cars = good
trains = bad

you better get that through your head

Thanks, Ace. Or should I say, Captain Obvious?

I'll stick to being carless and take my chances. Enjoy the gas prices!

The proper name for the tunnels into New York is the "North River Tunnels".

Funny thing is the part of the Northeast Corridor owned by the MTA, the part from Westchester County to New Haven didn't loose power.

The State of New Jersey really needs to buy the tracks and infrastructure of the Northeast Corridor line in New Jersey with New York doing the same in New York.

Kojack -- OR, we could stop subsidizing car travel and start properly investing in Amtrak for once.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the concept of Amtrak. It can work. You just need to stop cutting and cutting its funding.

Commuting Queen: Ace was trying to point out the inherent arrogance of the auto culture that deliberately destroyed this country's public transportation system. I know for a fact that Ace does not drive and he loves trains.
