NYC TV - Love It or Hate It

There's a NY Times article about NYC TV, our city's TV station, and basically crediting the turnaround from just showing City Council meetings and mayor press conferences to showcasing more cultural and social offerings, like short films, shows about hip-hop in the city, and what do for $9.99 in one day. But some critics, like City Councilwoman Gale Brewer, think the shows are too much about tourism and stuff that doesn't matter to real New Yorkers, "What are we learning from it? They're focusing on tourists and visitors rather than on New Yorkers who need basic services and want to know what their elected officials are doing." To which Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler says he enjoys "What's Cooking at Gracie" because his "idea of cooking is cereal."

Gothamist does enjoy Blueprint NYC and anything that takes us "behind the scenes." But we have to admit, after watching mayoral spokesman Jordan Barowitz on "What's Cooking at Gracie?", (the episode up at Arthur Avenue) we couldn't really read a press statement from him in the same way again. But the episode did inspire us to go to Arthur Avenue, so all is good.

There has been a lot of talk about AMy Palmer's hair - which is a mess. I'd like to offer a few bits of insight into Kely Choi's hair. Actually her styling seems to be inconcert with her two distinct personalities - that of the Matrix-like host of Secrets of NY and the more spunky downtown model on Eat Out. First a few comments on Asian hair. Asian women's hair tends to have higher porosity levels than blondes and brunettes, absorbing and retaining moisture more quickly. People mistakenly believe that Asian hair is more resistant to styling because they are straighter. Not true and this is where I think Ms. Choi can really get her stylists to improve upon both her looks: Many Asians tend to overperm. Highly porous hair tends to color and perm faster by as much as 50%. So it's important to use gentler solutions and customize the amount of recommended time. In Korea and Japan, you see a lot of frizzy and burnt hair thanks largely to soaking in strong solutions for too long. Fortunately Ms. Choi doesnt have this problem. Basically I think she should add some color to her hair. On Secrets I recommend a touch of green and white - nothing over the top. ANd someting a bnit more on the punk-rick side for Eat Out. She looks like she has a wild side so give the viewers a clue is that is true. Here are a few tips:

    Bleaching Tips & Tricks

Be careful, don't get the stuff in your eyes. Seriously....talk about having a bad day.

Be careful, bleach on the skin can equal a bad sunburn. And Kellys is pale enough as it is. I'm not kidding...been there done that. Some 40 weight developer on your scalp for 30 minutes and you'll know what itchy flaky pain feels like.

Bleaching strips the hair. Kelly - if you do it a lot, expect your hair to be a naked frail thing that doesn't stick to the top of your head very well. (I try not to bleach more than once every 3 months).

A professional beauty supply store will have 2 products that you need, Developer and Lightening agent. Ask your stylist for more info - who does your hair for Eat Out by the way? (Kelly, anyone?)

I think some developers could add something special to her look on Secrets: Developers come in weights (typically 20, 30, 40). 40 is extremely aggressive and you need to be careful not to burn your scalp. 20 is slow-acting barely working.

When styling celebs, I tend to stick with either 30 or 40 (with care).

Lightening agents/powders come in many different product lines. I have used them all on Asian beauties like Kelly, but am slightly partial to the Loreal Quick Blue powder and the BWFrost stuff. A lightening agent with a little blue/green will counter act the red-hair-effect of bleaching out dark hair.

Mix the bleach/powder in a non reactive bowl (NOT metal) with a non reactive (NOT metal) implement. I go for a thickness that isn't drippy (think mayonnaise), because it is easier to apply yourself - unless the NYCTV stylist is REALLY good.

You can use your fingers or a plastic brush for applying bleach. (I recommend NITRILE gloves for this. Nitrile is a better chemical barrier than latex)

Do your best (impossible to be perfect) to keep the bleach off of your scalp. Leave in until and keep moist (plast bag works well) until lightness is achieved (20 minutes to 1 hour). For Asian-black hair, you may want to think about a second bleaching the following day/week.

To speed things up, some hair stylists will apply heat (a.k.a. a blow dryer)

Then, be sure to rinse out carefully and thoroughly.

Hope that helps and I look forward to seeing more of Ms. Choi!

profiles is a show on 74. it has this goofy host names Mickey and it looks like public access... i cant believe people here support that lame show. it was a show on cable and now its on nyctv's broadcast channel 74

  • fallon

what is profiles. i have never seen this show

  • Pete

I believe NYC TV Profiles is outsourced, which is why they manage to get such well-known celebrities, as well as consistent shows. NYC TV seems to have trouble playing with the grown-ups in the big pool, while still learning how to tread water in the kiddy pool.
