Delivery Man-Robber Hits the Upper West Side

Police are looking for the man who has robbed four delivery men in a week. It seemed as though the same man had robbed three delivery men for Upper East Side restaurants, giving three different addresses on East 81st and East 82nd Streets, taking money, bikes and sometimes the delivery men's clothing. But on Saturday, he called for a order from Big Nick's, on the Upper West Side, met the delivery man in the lobby of a West 85th Street building, took the delivery man to the basement, then robbed him and took his bike. The police believe it's the same man and not a copy cat. We hope delivery men will just stay in the lobby or sidewalk where there are people.

Horrible, but if you think about it, they are the perfect target. Tired, carrying lots of cash...

You would think that the restaurants would have screened the callers a bit better after the first couple of robberies.

how do you screen a caller making an telephone order? ask them if he's going to rob anyone tonight?

where's Charles Bronson when we need him?

better yet, bring back Bernie Goetz

The various reports on the robberies say that he is calling asking for change for a $100 bill. That alone should be the tip-off.

You get their phone number and call them back on it after a while. If it's a cell, the police would eventually be able to trace it back to its owner. If it's a fake or made-up number, either there'll be no answer, it'll be out of service or the real resident will say they didn't order anything. Of course, it could be a payphone, but there aren't that many of those around nowadays, and if he sticks around to wait for the callback, he'd be risking suspicion since the only people who wait around payphones are often drug dealers.

If you listen to your scanner, the cops ask central for a "callback number".
That's a start.
Most take out places have caller ID, at least, the one's I've seen.
