Last Night's Action: Mets Take Act I of Subway Series in Bonechilling Night

On a weekend where Barry Bonds tied Babe Ruth for 2nd on the list of career home runs, two mets tied records of their own. Tom Glavine tied Dennis Eckersley for 35th place with career strike out number 2,401 and Carlos Delgado tied Harold Baines for 49th with his 384th career home run. 56,205 fans were on hand on a bitterly cold night to watch the Mets defeat the Yankees 4-3.

Tom Glavine pitched well, allowing two runs and seven hits in his six-inning outing, both runs coming in the 4th inning. The 4th inning was also when the Mets did their damage off Aaron Small, scoring all four of their runs via home run. The first was Delgado's three run homer to right followed by David Wright's 445' solo blast to left field.

The Yankees added a run in the 8th inning to make things much more interesting, but Billy Wagner entered the game for the 3rd time in this Subway Series match-up to earn his 9th save of the season. The save was arguably Wagner's most important save of the season coming after Saturday's disaster. The Yankees seemed to be helping the Mets out all last night, stranding 15 runners and hitting into three double plays - the worst came in the 8th inning after Jason Giambi had a sac fly with bases loaded. After the run, Alex "I don't know the definition of clutch" Rodriguez promptly hit into the inning ending double play.

The Mets have Monday off before the Phillies come to town Tuesday for a three game set and the Yankees play three against Boston starting Monday.
