Elevator Severs Man's Legs
Terrible, terrible accident in the Bronx in the middle of the night: A man's legs were severed by an elevator. The elevator, which was carrying 17 people, got stuck between floors:
That's when the man - who was not identified, but only described by cops as being in his 20s - was following two other men who had safely climbed out of the elevator to the lobby. The man is in critical condition, and the other passengers were rescued an hour later. This is a horrible accident; we wonder if the accident will be investigated because 17 people sounds like a lot for an elevator (though we don't know how what the capacity of the elevator was). We can't blame the guy for trying to get out, given the story of the Chinese food delivery man who was stuck for three days, but maybe this is a lesson to stay still. As he shimmied through the open doors, the elevator began to move, severing the man's legs, witnesses said.
The accident left the 14 people standing inside the elevator splattered in blood.
How Stuff Works on elevators.

I just read this in the NYPOST, how morbid! So the other people were stuck in there, 14 people in the elevator stuck with a decapitated man, still alive, blood everywhere -- sh*t what a nightmare all around.
Not to get all Syntax McSyntaxson, but "decapitated" means the head's cut off.
I saw this in a movie once....
Just imagine if he was decapitated and his legs were cut off. That's a heck of a story.
This is more proof that you should never try to climb out of a stalled elevator unless you're being helped by either the fire department or licensed elevator mechanics. You just never know when it's going to take off again. Even if you get out completely, there's also the story (possibly apocryphal) of someone climbing out of an elevator above floor level then toppling backward into the open shaft beneath the elevator. Then there's the story (not apocryphal) of the student messing around with an elevator door at an upstate college about 20 years ago. A maintenance man in the mechanical room thought it was a malfunction and overrode the safeties to get it moving. Poor kid didn't stand a chance.
Considering the dude probably climbed out of the elevator head-first, I imagine the folks in the elevator were trapped in there for another hour with the guy's severed legs. In any case, a horrible nightmare for all involved (especially the victim, of course).
Low overhead.
Damn. You know, when it was on Six Feet Under, it was pretty cool in a disgusting morbid way. Now it's just disgusting.
There was a recent case of a Doctor running for an elevator in a Hospital (of all places) and the doors slamming on his neck while the elevator started moving (He fell!). That guy was, indeed, decapitated. I don't have time to search for the old news story but I remember being horrified when I read it. This is almost as bad. I know that I never stick my hand in if the doors are more than halfway closed.
I got stuck in the elevator of my previous apt. building and had to call the super to get me out. When the doors opened the elevator was between floors. With the above situation in mind, to say that I scrambled out of there would be an understatement.
