Tidbits

- The Place restaurant is engaged in a dispute with their landlords, Edith Rappy and Taube Management, who have decided not to renew The Place’s lease without any explanation. The community is rallying behind owner Alexander Achilleos and his restaurant at www.savetheplace.com; we encourage you to sign the petition if you'd like to help out this local favorite, which gives 10% of its proceeds to charity. The Place at W.10th Street is not impacted by this dispute and remains open.

- A Hamburger Today + Cupcakes Take the Cake = Burgers & Cupcakes, a new spot from Mitchell London serving, well, take a wild guess. 458 Ninth Ave. between 35th and 36th, 212-643-1200. [via Urban Daddy]

2006_05_food_corkd.jpg- Calling all wine geeks -- there's a new site just for you. Cork'd is a free site that allows you to rate and catalog wines and then share your reviews with others. There's even a social networking component, aptly titled "Drinking Buddies." Each time one of your buddies adds a new review, you'll be notified.

- Chowhound has a few threads about good options for dining alone in New York. We chimed in with our suggestion -- the bar at Otto. What are your favorite places to dine alone comfortably?

My favorite place to dine alone is the counter at Bonnie's Grill on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. Best burgers, fries and chicken wings in Brooklyn, and friendly service. There's a TV that's always tuned to whatever game is going on, in case you have nothing to read.

Dining alone? Anywhere! Let's all work to make dining alone acceptable again.

Isn't "corked" generally a negative word w/ wine?

Dinig alone: Saigon Grill; the counter at the local diner with a good counterman (or City Diner to be specific, ask for Pete) and Azuri Cafe.

9th Ave food festival is this weekend!

Thali in the West Village is just "seating at the tiny bar" -- excellent food, and the flavors are way more subtle & non-oily than at most affordable Indian places.
