Last Night's Action: An Instant Classic in Yankee Comeback

With Giambi, Sheffield and Matsui on the shelf, Gothamist can’t blame any of you who switched off tonight’s game after the Yankees fell behind 9-0. But, if you did, you missed one of the greatest Yankee games in recent history. Jorge Posada hit a two-run, walk-off, home run to give the Yankees a thrilling 14-13 victory over Texas.

Erasing a 9-0 deficit matched the biggest comeback in franchise history and when the Yankees took an 11-10 lead, it seemed like they would certainly win. But, Texas took a 12-11 lead and the Yankees tied the game again. Then, the Rangers scored off of Mariano Rivera in the ninth to take a 13-12 lead, only to see Posada blast New York to victory.

Posada’s home run was the perfect capper to a great night. He had 5 RBI”s including the one that tied the game at twelve and made a fantastic block of home to keep Texas from scoring in the sixth inning. In the Yankees’ star-studded lineup, Jorge Posada often goes unnoticed, but he always contributes, no more so than tonight.

By the way, I realized everyone forgot to point out the fact that Bernie Williams has tied Babe Ruth on the all-time Yankees list for doubles (424 as a Yankee). One more, and he surpasses Ruth in 2B as a Yank!

enjoythegame: I think you need to look at the big picture here..yes it was an exciting game because of the outcome, but if it wasn't for a moon pitch from Akinori Otsukover over the plate to Posada and the Yankees lose, then what ? Your only saying that because the Yankees won..The team has big problems...

I think J is missing the point entirely. If you can't sit back (or sit on the edge of your seat) and enjoy that game without thinking about the Yankee staff's shortcomings, there is something wrong with you. That was one of the best regular season games in years. The point is it was a tremendously exciting game of baseball. Not to mention if I would worry about anyone it would be Small. Chacon has been nasty, I don't care if his era went up to 9.50 on a freak outing. Aaron has been consistently bad.

Chacon's hurt. He got clobbered in the leg during the Boston series. That may have something to do with it.

Consider also: both Wang and Wright (or Wright and Wang? he he) threw well over the weekend, and Mussina was Mussina on Monday... they just didn't hit. They'll probably pick up a pitcher between now and the Fourth of July... they'll be fine.

I agree. Lately these slugfests annoy me because they just highlight the lack of pitching on the Yankees staff. But a comeback is a comeback and besides a pitcher's duel, a comeback from behind this many runs is one of my favorite things to watch in baseball.

Missing the point..!

Chacon gave up eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and two walks, swelling his earned run average to 5.21 from 3.68.

So we squeeked out a win in a slugfest ,and The Rangers have a lamer closer. We still have no starting pitching.!
