Map of the Day: My Washington Square

2006_05_mywsp.JPG

As part of her MFA, Alexis Lloyd created this very cool site, My Washington Square, which gives people a way to share experiences. She calls it an "experience-mapping project," as people can submit stories - or read others or learn about the park's history. When you submit your story, you drag a marker to the part of the park you want, describe what happened, when it happened, and can even add a photo. This will probably be the wave of the future - just add Podcasts and videos, and this will become a time capsule.

We wrote about Alexis's awesome AdScape project last December. And he two main sources for the historical information are Around Washington Square by Luther S. Harris and It Happened on Washington Square by Emily Kies Folpe.

I tried creating someting like this a few years back for all of NYC -"citystories". It never got off the ground, the technology just wasn't there for a non-tech person to be able to run it. With googlemaps it probably much more do-able.

Man, I remember the spot where I took a dump and where I got pricked by a hypodermic needle. There was this great place where black guys would try to sell me rock cocaine too.

  • ffffffffff

I'll map where at least 4 undercover cops tried to sell me drugs in a single day.

  • Wow. I'm working on a similar project and came up with 'experience mapping' also. I guess it's the new psychogeography. Check it:

    experience mapping at mpinto.org

My next step is to include photos, video, and audio recording.

  • i wish somebody could tie this into dodgeball so you could add comments to places with your cell phone via SMS and voice. then you could put in "93rd & 2nd" and send it to memories@newyork.com or something and it would come back with 5 stories

"i got laid here in 2002"

    "great pizza around the corner"

    "look at that building!"

    etc.
