Gothamist Music Picks

With KEXP in town there's a lot more music than usual. Check out their in studio shows online while you're at work this week. Off the airwaves there's a lot to see, hear and enjoy as well. Tonight and tomorrow night, Angels and Airwaves and I Am The Avalanche play Bowery Ballroom. If you walk by the venue to see a cluster of pierced tweens waiting to get in, it may help to know that the former band is Tom from Blink 182. Goldfrapp is also in town, playing Irving Plaza tonight.

2006_05_arts_veirs.jpg Laura Veirs is at Mercury Lounge tonight. Indie boys with glasses love her, she should have a profile on Consumating. Tuesday night get ready to dance. Ghostland Observatory is still in town, they played to a packed room on Saturday night at Mercury Lounge...so be sure to buy tickets ahead of time for their Tuesday night show at the Delancey (and leave your jacket at home, it's gonna be hot in there). Opening the show are the Mugs and Favourite Sons.

Wednesday night, the band that may have accomplished writing the worst song ever, plays at Bowery Ballroom. Yes, the band Say Anything will be in town singing their song, "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too". Seriously! That's the name of the song! Instead, you should go to Knitting Factory and check out Art Brut, Art Brut 47 (aka: We Are Scientists), Think About Life and The Chalets.

Thursday night is filled with tough calls. Architecture in Helsinki is at Avalon, Tom Verlaine (of Television) is at Bowery Ballroom, he's also there Friday. Meanwhile, there's a really solid lineup over at Mercury Lounge with: The Essex Green, Illinois, The Head Set. It's just too rare to have a 3 band bill in which we want to see all of the bands.

Friday night Vic Thrill, Land of Talk, Autodrone, Slowlands hit Mercury Lounge [full disclosure: "we" manage Slowlands.] Earlier that evening at the Housing Works Cafe, Alec Ounsworth (of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Richard Julian, Fernando Saunders peform.

Saturday night Rainer Maria and Ambulette (aka Bella Lea) take on Bowery Ballroom - we've always enjoyed Rainer Maria - so this should be a good pick for the night. While somewhere in Williamsburg Pela plays a rooftop. Also playing Saturday night are the Pshycic Ills, we've heard good things, but can't confirm first hand...they'll be at Knitting Factory so check them out and report back.

Sunday there's a lot to do, so hopefully you've got some energy left. The National, Baby Dayliner, Doveman are playing at Webster Hall. Baby Dayliner will be at Soundfix for an instore the day before, at 4pm. If you're feeling super motivated you can head to Jerz where Film School, Margot and The Nuclear So & So's, Bronze Episode will be rocking Maxwell's.

While you think about all the shows we "missed" in this post, enjoy some a/v treats:
