Everything Bagels, Taste Tested

Josh Karpf at foody.org tackled taste testing a staple of the Sunday morning: The everything bagel. He took bagels from Terrace Bagels and Bagel Hole in Brooklyn and judged them by their appearance, taste - even the bags they come in. Now, Josh does not seem to name one the winner over the other, as it may depend on how you like your bagels (soft or chewy? sweet or malty?). You can see the photographic evidence and analysis here.

And we knew there had to be a petition protesting the moniker, "everything bagel" - this one says, "Everything" bagels are lieing [sic]. They do not contain everything. Where are the raisins, pumpernickle/rye breads, the cinnamon?

i get a "everything bagel" every morning, and i think they are better than everything!

So-called everything bagels present something of a problem for set theorists. Namely, that a true everything bagel would be topped with (in addition to the usual seeds, salt, onion, etc.) the entire universe and everything in it, not to mention... everything bagels.

Ess-a Bagel in Manhattan on 21st Street and First Avenue makes the most sublime, most perfect bagels I ever tasted. Go there.

  • Absolute bagels. Totally absolute bagels. In the morning when many of the varieties are hot out of the oven, it's like heaven with a hole in the middle.

ABSOLUTE BAGELS on 108th and Broadway... can't match it.

  • Bagels are subjective.

H&H is good and there seem to be some good ones in Hoboken - apparently the only place outside of NYC to have decent bagels.

you're all on crack. it's murray's on 6th and 13th hands down (and their pastrami even gives katz's a run for their money!)

  • Holey cow! (pun intended). Bergen Bagels on Bergen and Flatbush Ave. have NO peer in Brooklyn or elsewhere. And they have great spreads including dill cc and new jalapeno cc (which is great with onion). Mmmmmmm!

  • I'm two blocks from Bagel Hole. Bagels are good, as are the spreads. Coffee ain't so great, though - walk down a coupla more blocks north to the orange awning bodega.

I'd like to see an everything- bagel-off between "The Bagel Store" on Bedford in Williamsburg and "Bagelsmith", also on Bedford. I took a break from going to Bagelsmith a while back (have since returned) when i went in and the guy called me "baby" 700 times. Thanks Baby - 40cents is your change baby, you want a bag baby, have a good day baby. YUCK.

Brooklyn doesn't know bagels from bicycle wheels. Best bagels in New York: Absolute Bagels, 108th and Broadway. Y'all ain't ready!

They have such different bagels... I loved them both when I lived there-- for different reasons. Terrace has a full deli so you can get whatever you want. Their bagels are fluffy and huge. Bagel hole bagels are small and sticky and chewy and they have like three options-- but rarely a line.

    jayKayEss:

Odd. IN Boston, what we called Long Island Bagels were the groups of short yet bosomly girls with high-pitched whinny voices in horrible accents.

  • Agreed! "Everything" bagels are a lie because they are missing the most important ingredient... Love!

  • The inaccuracy of "everything" always bugged me, too. Where I grew up Upstate (Ithaca) we called them "Long Island" bagels.

  • Terrace Bagels is awesome! It has good coffee, good bagels, and is open late. I highly recommend it.
