THEATER: Mike Daisey, the versatile, unpredictable monologuist (and onetime Gothamist interviewee), has revealed a lot about his own past and personality over the course of his years of performing and writing. Now, in the last entry of the season at Galapagos' "Evolve" series, he's going after new material -- a select array of "Great Men of Genius" other than himself. Last week he explored the life
of Bertolt Brecht; tonight, he takes on circus impresario P.T. Barnum, and the next two weeks will feature scientist Nikola Tesla and Scientologist L. Ron Hubbard. It's a quirky meeting of minds and talents that reminds you why live theater is so much better than the straightforward, standard-issue bio you usually get with film and TV.
Through May 26 // Fridays at 8pm // Galapagos Art Space [70 N. Sixth St, Williamsburg] // Tickets via Smarttix
GARDEN PARTY: TIME'S UP!, an environmental and bicycle education and action group, and More Gardens!, a community garden support group, will hold a roving garden party to celebrate and save New York City community gardens. The event will raise awareness of gardens in danger of destruction by developers (there are 65!). On hand will include the Reverend Billy and his Church of Stop Shopping Choir, costumed revelers, gardeners, cyclists, and many others. Dress up and bring the noise to raise awareness. Also included in the itinerary is a stop at PS 64 to support the CHARAS Community Center which is up for landmark designation on May 16th.
Saturday // Procession 2pm, Picnic 5pm // Tompkins Square Park // Free
BLOCK PARTY: The Grand Street Block Party looks like good fun. The lineup is as follows: Vietnam, Whiteshoes and the Nightmares of Nashville, The Comas, Jeremy Youcum (Oceanographer), The Roulette Sisters. On top of the live music there will be DJs, drinks and retailers set up. However, there will also be a ton of rain, so...hopefully one of those retailers is selling ponchos.
Saturday // 1pm // Grand Street between Havemeyer Street and Marcy Avenue // Free
ART: Cabin Comforts is the latest installation at Secret Project Robot. An impressive homey cabin environment has been created and filled with artwork, which will apparently be sold at reasonable prices. The pieces will include drawings, zines, music and video, utility crafts and decorative arts, sculpture, furniture, wearable art, photography and ephemera, all of those things found in the living, vital home. And we so want a tree swing in our apartment now, like the one in the photo to the right.
Saturday // 3 to 9pm // Secret Project Robot [210 Kent Avenue at Metropolitan] // Free
