Vesuvio Playground Erupting Through 2007!

2006_5_vesuvio1.jpg

According to this sign that went up yesterday, the massive renovation going on in Soho's Vesuvio Playground will last until next year! Should it really take nine months to install some new fences, playground equipment, and an in-ground pool? People in the neighborhood are pretty upset that the Parks Department decided to close the playground through the entire Spring and Summer-- and the old people and homeboys who normally hang out on the benches in the park have been forced to relocate across the street.

One mystery that still hasn't been solved-- what will happen to the cute bathroom building in the corner of the park?

These projects always take forever, and you'll only ever see one or two guys working at any one time (or one working, one smoking).

We need to get Trump on this - remember what he did with the Wollman Rink? Parks Department - Ya Fired!

gonna miss handball, but at least i dont have to deal with the thugs and vagrants (who managed to tag the construction equipment). tough to predict the fate of the changing house- it may stay for good, or act as a storage shed before demolition during the last phases of the project

I agree! I walk by there on my way to work and noticed today how sad the little kiddy corner with the farm/zoo animal mural looks. I'm sure some folks donated their time and talent to do the artwork and now it can't even be enjoyed by the kids. Boo.

Yeah, the same thing happened in my neighborhood. They closed down Hell's Kitchen Park for a complete rehaul and even though the sign said it would take a year, it actually took a little longer than that. But, that's the problem with city agencies and capital projects. They put out bids for this kind of stuff. So even if the lowest bid is from two guys with a tiny construction co., they take it.

What a crock!! The lazy pieces of crap at the parks department first close the park in front of Joe's (Is it Father Demo Sq?) and now they close the Vesuvio just in time for summer! How in the world do they get away with this stuff when one of the mildest winter's just past us by and no work was done?! Not to mention that Houston is torn up like a minefield! WHY DURING THE SUMMER!?

Is it just me or have Gothamist and Curbed commenters been angry this week way out of proportion to the issues being discussed?

Sigh...
I walked up Sullivan Street and almost walked past it. I did a double take and my jaw dropped.
Some guy was locking up the fence and as he walked by me, looked at me, and asked, "Are you the Exterminator?"
I replied, "No, no, I'm not the exterminator."
I was wearing a pinstripped suit and had a briefcase in my hand.
Did I look like an exterminator?
Later on I walked back to see one of the old neighborhood guys staring at the park in rubbles through the fence. Tear.
I did manage to see the exterminator though, he was some fat guy in an exterminator tshirt and blue jeans.

I'll miss walking by those wood and iron monkey bars.

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen, but I don't care. Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I can't be bothered with anything recently.
