Sometimes, New Yorkers grouse at tourists - usually when they are slowmoving in midtown or talk really loudly about needing to find Ground Zero - but we usually love them, because if there's anything that makes us feel good, it's giving directions. But incidents like this give tourists a bad name: Three teenagers were arrested for throwing cans of paint off a Midtown hotel roof. And being smart kids from Roanoke Country High School in Virginia, they threw the cans at cops outside the 17th Precinct on East 51st Street. The Post says one can "glanced off an officer's head" and his injury wasn't too serious, but really, a paint can thrown off a 17-floor Doubletree? Maybe NYC & Company, the city's tourism arm, can come up with a slogan like, "Visit NYC, but if you break the law, you're going to be arrested."
This Doubletree location is in the recently renovated Metropolitan hotel, that wacky 1960s looking building on Lexington and 51st.

They're so lucky they didn't kill anyone.
What morons. Think they'll write a Review of Jail for a Tourist magazine?
Wow it's like that cane whipped punk who grafittied in Singapore.
Bored suburban kids, even in a world-class city, are still too thick-headed or obnoxious to find other ways to amuse themselves.
Let our NYPD scare the snot out of them.
I want the 42nd street of the 50's 60's and 70's back. I am tired of Disney and Megalopolis buildings on every corner of NYC. And yes, there are two many Wal Mart and Kmart people in NYC every day, including weekends.
Maybe the guys with the paint have been watching their fill of the rerun episodes of Home Alone down in Virginia and are now wannabe stunt boys. Maybe they wanted to feel at home like the other deviants in NYC. The guys obviously did not want the image of tourrist. So much for homeland security. The cops didn't see that act of terroism until it hit them.
Waiting for Ecko to come to their defense. Once again the NYPD interferes with artists' freedom of expression!
MH, I do too. But I also want these punks in jail for a long time.
Maybe some time in the Tombs will change their evil ways...
Yes mickster. A crime is a crime. If they go to Rikers Island, they will wish they had stayed home. They will realize how green they are and hopefully get out of the punk profession.
MH, Times Square of yesterday AND today sucked. Going there meant you're either a greasy loser pervert or a soccer mom tourist. Times Square could be completely torn down and I won't give a shit, because it was never worth hanging out there in the 60s 70s 80s 90s OR today.
If you guys don't constantly tell other people how great New York and New Yorkers are does it cease it to be true? You guys remind me of Harvard graduates that always manage to work Harvard into every conversation, afraid that you will otherwise realize they aren't any smarter than you.
Fuck Time square. I want it there because it gave NYC a cerebral edge. I don't want it there so that I can hang out there. Amsterdam Holland is doing what Time Square was doing for years, except for the legalized pot. I just think NYC should be honest. They swept all of 42nd street element under a rug. Opened a Hustler Club on the west side highway and moved the other strippers and peep shows to the outer buroughs. Why try to hide. Now "42nd street" is next to the elementary and junior high schools. They should have built a tourist attraction of 42nd and Time Square at 53rd and 59th of 5th and Madison or on Randals Island. Mayor Koch, Mayor Guliani,Mayor Dinkins, love them or not, all came out of the existence of NYC of 60's 70's. It gave NYC personality. Everthing in life is not nicey nice or politically correct. Where is the balance. NYC should lead, not follow.
On WCBS last night they showed a reporter attempting to inteview one of the morons' mother last night down in Virgina. She said something like "I don't want to talk to you people!"
A few minitues of reasearch yeilds the following fun facts about Roanoke County Virginia:
It is "93.63% White" according to census statistics.
It is basically in the middle of nowhere in the Blue Ridge mountans.
According to the county website their major employer is their school system. Apparently, the 2340 employees aren't doing a good job of teaching physics and civics.
This just proves that tourists can be a hazzard. Other stupid tourist tricks include:
Stepping into traffic to take a photograph.
Creating a hazzard on the Brooklyn Bridge by posing for photographs in the bike lane.
Wandering the WTC PATH station taking illegal photos. (Why the hell can't the Port Authority enforce thier photo ban there? Taking photos there is just wrong.)
Travelling in large disorganized groups on the subway.
Toby. Yes I agree with the large disorganized groups on the subways. Maybe they should create tourrist shuttle trains that only stop at major attractions. If the Port Authority can not enforce their photo ban they'd better start photographing the photographers.
I remember Roanoke Virginia. I have waited on GreyHound buses there, overlay time. It was always very quiet and still. It was a very pleasant place. Maybe the boys are so sheltered, they thought they where going to a place just like Roanoke. The police in Roanoke must be unprovoked. They usually are in a quiet town. Why would the young boys think that they could come from Roanoke and behave the way they do in Roanoke. Unless NYC city is being advertized as a kinder and gentler state like Roanoke. It is a good thing that it was police they were up agianst and instead of gang members. Unfortunately, they will not learn. I have a feeling that they will get a slap on the wrist like they have already gotten at home. Then we will hear of something horrific in ten years from them that could have been avoided had they done the time.
Roanoke is actually a beautiful place. Not much to do, but I have fond memories going there to visit my mother's best friend as a kid and into my teens. There is a huge star that can be seen for miles on top of a mountain that also doubles as a lookout point; a great place to throw cans of paint. And there is also...wait, no, that's it.
Oh, the romance of old Times Square. Lots of wanna be hipsters long for those days when the only teenagers in the area were runaway prostitutes and junkies. What a happy time that was.
And thanks to Toby the couch potato for giving us that shocking info on Roanoke. I'm sure it would be a much better place if it was 93% black, because black neighborhoods have no crime at all.
nola. What are you talking about. If they are not at "old Time Square," then where are they. Happy times it "was." Babe...those people haven't gone anywhere. Teenagers, runaway prostitutes and junkies. Drug dealing and prositution, the last time I checked, are still big business in NYC. You sound a little upset that Toby pointed at white people. I didn't read anything in defense of black people. Why are you so upset. He didn't say anything about how he was "sure" it would be a better place if it was 93% black. Thanks for not being politically correct. I don't like the term African American.
Why not pull out the tired "dumb Southerners" response while you're at it?
I'm living in Roanoke at the moment, and while I don't condone the actions of three stupid (and by this I mean what did they think would happen when tossing cans of paint at a police precinct) high school kids from Cave Spring High School (not Roanoke County High School, as quoted in the NY Post piece), I also don't think blaming the county of Roanoke is the solution either.
Why not cite the total amount of crimes committed in NYC by people living elsewhere for comparison?
Here's an update on this story from The Roanoke Times:
Court date set for students charged with throwing paint cans in New York
why not just pour the paint out of the cans?? why throw the whole thing? if causing a fuss was the intent, they should have just dumped the paint.
foolish kids!
Toby,
You're being unfair. There are plenty of native NY assholes, too. You pick on the tourists for blocking the bike lane on the Brooklyn Bridge, but I've seen way too many people with their $2000 bikes and lycra zooming over the Manhattan Bridge walkway, even though the bike path was open. And I'm warning those asswipes right now: Try to do that near me and you're getting a body check right into the chain link fence. You pick on tourists stepping out into traffic to take pictures. What about all the careless native jaywalkers? I'm not talking about people who are smart enough to cross the street against the light when there's no traffic, but the idiots who act like they own the street and can take their sweet time crossing against the light in heavy traffic. They should be run over.
MH - Toby gave that statistic because he is one of those pathetic diversity-worshipers that thinks a county that is almost all white must somehow be a bunch of Klansmen. That's what happens to dorks who form their worldview through tv programs.
And as for the old TS, there are far fewer porn palaces, teen prostitutes and junkies roaming the streets of NY now than there were in the 70s. That is one reason the overall crime rate is so much lower. TS was a profoundly depressing place back then - I'm not saying it is perfect now but anything is better than that.
Too bad they did that stunt.
I heard they got a Letterman show to go to.
White boys, what do you expect????
thatsa rhetorical question.
remember the frozen flying turkey incident in LI?
If you're going to trash these kids at least have your facts straight. They are actually students attending Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia as opposed to "Roanoke Country High School". Also, NYC is notorious for crime, there are just as many stupid kids native to the city who would do something just as ignorant if not more so. And I love the shallow implications of the dipshit southerners/ tourists steretypes... very kind. And is the 93% white comment supposed to imply southern racism? If so, how it the hell does that effect the likelyhood of three kids throwing paint cans off of a hotel?
These kids did something really stupid, but people make mistakes. I am from Roanoke, know two of the three kids that did this, and also know that the media has gotten a lot of this story WRONG. Reporters have taken the story too far and have been harassing the family and friends of the three all week. Also, just to completely get the facts straight, they aren't all from Cave Spring High School. The 2 boys go there but the girl attends Hidden Valley High School, also in Roanoke County (Hence the term "Roanoke County High School students").
p.s. only PAINT hit an officer's head, not a paint can.
Roanoke County is a middle of nowhere place, that is mostly white, but the city schools of Roanoke are mostly black and very urban. One of the kids tag name is ASK, which is all over downtown Roanoke (a very bustling place) and old southwest.
