Yesterday around 3pm we got a report that the geniuses who are knocking down 27 Cooper Square undermined the sidewalk, collapsed a scaffolding, and wounded three pedestrians. By the time we got up there around 5pm, the cops had already cleared the scene, but the sidewalk was still blocked off. If you haven't been up to the area in awhile, it's a shocking change-- they are literally tearing down the entire city block kittycorner to Cooper Union. For the millionth time, it's sad to see beautiful old brick buildings like the ones on this block torn down to make room for ugly condo highrises and NYU dorms. Bah!

It's catercorner.
If you are going to be critical, it is important that you also be 100% correct. It's both:

Meow.
Don't forget to mention that Cooper Union's Hewitt Building will be coming down sometime this summer too.
First of all, the buildings on this block were not 'beautiful' they were low-slung shit-holes with little to no character, and which housed a sheet metal shop, a squat-house for heroin addicts, and a long-defunct pizza shop which had crappy slices (makes me miss St. Marks pizza which now houses Chickpea, the most bland falaffels and shwarmas on the planet).
Second, 27 Cooper is not being torn down, it looks like only 29-33 are. 27 is a decent looking building with some history to it, it seems.
Third, it's not going to be a dorm or a condo....do some research ( as the geico cro-magnons say )!
Fourth, rumor has it that "The Donald" bought the big parking lot on the corner of 4th and bowery, and if it's true, that will definitely be an eyesore and a shame. That's really what you should be complaining about. Bah !
First, 27 Cooper isn't being torn down, it appears only 29-33 are.
Second, the buildings being demolished were not 'beautiful' nor were they character-laden. They were 2 and 3 story dumpy heroin-havens and a sheet metal shop among other things. And Village Karaoke has moved into fancier digs on St. Marks, and thus weren't put out of business.
Third, it's not going to be a condo nor is it going to be a dorm.....do some research ( as the spokes-cromagnons from geico would say ).
Fourth, rumor has it that "The Donald" bought the corner of 4th and bowery. That is really the travesty you should be complaining about, as I am sure it will be an awful addition like every one of his other buildings.
Finally, the only bad thing that seems to have happened here is that 3 pedestrians were injured. That is a shame and I do hope they are ok.
