No Sweep

2006_04_smetslogo.jpgLima Time didn't go so well, but that's okay for Mets fans because for the 2nd weekend series in a row, they took 2 of 3 from the Braves. Lima wasn't good in his 5 inning appearance, allowing 5 funs over 5 innings, but Bartolome Fortunato was just plain bad. Fortunato allowed a stunning 8 runs (all earned) in 1 1/3 innings. The end result was a 13-3 whooping by the Braves.

Perhaps the biggest surprise from the Mets for Gothamist all season isn't their great start, which is very impressive, but the play of Kaz Matsui. We expected him to kick the ball around the infield and kill the team with his bat in key situations. While he's only hitting .254, Matsui only has one error and has actually made good plays in the field. If he can keep up in the field, we would almost argue that he should stay at 2nd even when Anderson Hernandez comes off the DL.

The bigger problem facing the Mets is their starting pitching. Victor Zambrano, who tore his flexor tendon on Saturday, needs season ending surgery and has possibly seen his last days with the Mets. Brian Bannister, who helped the Mets to their hot start, is on the DL as is John Maine, his replacement. So whether Lima Time was good on Sunday or not, it could be here to stay for a little while. No news on whether Lima will be singing the national anthem with his wife by his side, but Omar Minaya has ruled out Aaron Heilman and Mike Pelfrey to move into the starting rotation.

And please, no mentions of a certain pitcher in Tampa.

You know that Dwight would be the perfect 5th pitcher...YOU KNOW IT!

The weekend started out so strong as well. Eh, I guess we're all kind of used to this as Mets fans.

Oh, I'll say it.

Scott Kazmir!

Is it too late to void the Kazmir-Zambrano trade?

Hasn't Lima run out his 9 lives yet? I swear this guy has gotten more chances in his career.... of course, he shows moments of brilliance, so it's hard to blame a GM for taken a 1/2 - 1 mil chance.

Willie has already stated that Kaz Matsui has the job of second baseman, even when Hernandez comes back from the DL. Matsui is paid too much to have him as a bench warmer.

Jack - that'll last until Kaz starts to suck again. He may be paid alot, but the Mets'll pull him if he starts blowing. The Mets can only hope that Kaz realizes that this is the last year of his contract; the Mets will never resign him, but he's playing for recognition somewhere else. I predict he'll be playing in Milwaukee or Pittsburgh next year for 1.5 mil.
