It's a Gas Gas Gas

2006_05_schumergas.jpgBrooklyn's own Senator Charles Schumer is supporting the effort to eliminate foreign ethanol tariffs to alleviate rising gas prices. While gas prices would only be lowered by 8 cents if it went through, he said, "But with prices as high as they are, every nickel helps." That's true, but if you can't even find a gas station, then you're using up gas to find one. The Washington Post problem of 830,000 cars and only 54 gas stations in Manhattan, as gas stations are going bye-bye as the land is snapped up by developers. The city's planning office is looking at ways to make sure gas stations can remain, such as special zoning for gas stations and repair shops. Hmm, might a gas station be deemed a landmark at a point?

Last week, amNew York looked at how gas prices will affect the NYC residents - even those who don't drive - with rent, food, and airfare. And Rudy Giuliani is facing some gas problems: He made a deal with a Houston law firm for $10 million, where they get to put his name on their firm, but as is the case with many Houston law firms (we'd think), they have some ties to Big Oil.

Better yet, why don't we have ATM-like gas servicing machines which could be dotted all over the city? Bury a well-designed few thousand gallon tank by each Gas-ATM

Schumer = media whore

Better yet, why don't we have ATM-like gas servicing machines which could be dotted all over the city? Bury a few thousand gallon, well-designed tank by each Gas-ATM, and have a refill truck go around each night/week to top them off.

Also, I don't know if this was true in real life, but in the old Hollywood movies, such as "Some Like It Hot", it seemed that there was once indoor gas stations. It might not be a bad idea to have them installed in the parking garages which we seem to have all over the city, or gasp, inside residential buildings. I think the danger that gasoline represents might have been a bit overplayed in our hollywood-scorched minds.

Better yet, get a scooter!

So Senator Press Release has an idea! Maybe, just maybe, he could forgo one Sunday press conference and actually respond to constituent mail. Schumer's great at raising money and getting his name in the newspaper but what does he actually do for the people who voted for him? Write him a letter, send him a fax or email and you will never hear back from him. A lousy senator. He's lost my vote.

I notice that in Paris, with its lack of space, many gas stations are little more than one or two pumps set up at curbside (ala iceberg's comment), with no self serve. Something like this could work in New York if they were set up on streets with less traffic, or near bus stops where there is already space cleared.

So instead of importing oil we're going to import ethanol? I guess sending our money to Brazil is better than sending it to the middle east but so much for energy independence.

And good luck getting more gas stations in the NIMBY capital of America.

There's hardly any reason to put more gas stations in Manhattan. I've owned a car for 5 years, and I've probably filled up in Manhattan once. IN order to get here, you have to go through New Jersey, Westchester, Queens, Brooklyn, etc., andyou can find gas stations everywhere.

I know nobody who blows through a tank of gas driving in circles around Manhattan; most people with cars here use them sparingly (to go to Costco, etc.) and for day or weekend trips out of the city where gas is easier to find (and cheaper). As long as you plan, you shouldn't ever need to drive around looking for gas in Manhattan or get stuck on the WSH waiting to buy it.
